Raith Rovers 0 Ross County 1
Ross County secured their highest ever league finish with a hard-fought win over relegated Raith--and notched up a remarkable 15-game unbeaten run.
Teenage substitute Craig Campbell headed his first senior goal six minutes from time to gave County the points--and manager Neale Cooper was delighted to end the campaign on a high. Cooper said: "It was typical end-of-season stuff but it was a good result and the main thing was to make sure we didn't lose our unbeaten run.
"That's 15 games we have gone without losing and, when I look back to the middle of January, when we were sitting second-bottom, no one would have given us much chance of finishing third. But all credit to the players. They have worked hard. To beat a team like Raith--who I still think are better than their position--four times this season is a great achievement."
County fielded six players under 20 and Cooper believes it is the only way ahead.
He said: "The two centre backs are both teenagers, as are Conor Gethins and Don Cowie, and they all did very well. The game was a good opportunity to look at things because clubs like us will have to go with young players and I think we are quite strong in that department.
"The foreign players have left and we will probably lose one or two of the senior pros as well if they get better offers elsewhere, so we have to build from within."
However, it was a player at the other end of the age range who drew particular praise.
Cooper added: "Goalkeeper Les Fridge was absolutely out standing and kept us in the game. When he came to us from Caley Thistle a month or so ago he had not played a competitive match for nine months, but I promised him I would give him this game because he hadn't had a chance, with Tony Bullock in such good form."
Although there was nothing to play for, the game had its moments. Raith had the better chances but could find no way past Fridge who made great blocks to deny Shaun Dennis, Mark Jones and Nacho Novo, while Dennis also rattled the post from close range after the County keeper had saved his header.
At the other end, Raith's Australian goalie Simon Miotto denied Gethins and Hugh Robertson, while Steven Ferguson came close with a fierce drive from 25 yards which rattled the crossbar and then saw another effort cleared off the line by Laurie Ellis.
With a goalless draw looking likely, Cowie made space on the right to deliver a cross into the centre, where Campbell was waiting to head home.
