Dundee United 1 Ross County 0
Dundee United cut Ross County's lead at the top of the Scottish Championship to eight points thanks to Calum Butcher's seventh-minute strike.
The midfielder headed home from a corner to clinch a 1-0 victory and end County's six-game league winning run.
Ross Stewart, Jamie Lindsay and Michael Gardyne all had second-half shots saved as the away side pushed for a leveller.
But United held on to keep the title race alive with eight games left.
A win for the Highlanders would have sent them 14 points clear and all but wrapped up a return to the top flight.
However, United, beaten 5-1 at home by County in September, ground out a vital triumph that could have been more comfortable had Nicky Clark converted a late one-on-one.
