Lee Erwin's late penalty put Kilmarnock in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup at the expense of Ross County.
The striker's third goal of the season came after the red-carded Tim Chow was judged to have fouled Rory McKenzie.
But there was even later drama when County goalkeeper Aaron McCarey saw his header from a corner saved on the line by Killie counterpart Jamie MacDonald.
McCarey was adamant the ball had crept over the line at the corner but it was not given.
The first half was far from spectacular, but Killie did almost take the lead in bizarre fashion when McKenzie's cross from the right-hand side floated over McCarey and hit the top of the post.
McCarey had earlier saved well from Eamonn Brophy's stinging drive, and Rangers target Jordan Jones looked bright in parts on the left wing.
Ross County handed a debut to new signing Inih Effiong, a towering striker who joined on an 18-month deal from Woking. The Englishman was a handful at times, with one overhead kick looping high over the crossbar before Killie goalkeeper MacDonald later closed Effiong down after Billy Mckay had played him in.
Jason Naismith had headed just wide midway through the second half, before the game burst into life in the closing few minutes.
Kris Boyd's replacement Erwin confidently struck the winner from 12 yards.
