| Comments | Match Report Report from the BBC Ross County 2 Dundee 1 Darren Maatsen's stoppage-time goal gave Ross County their first league win of the season and consigned Dundee to a third defeat inside a week. Michael Gardyne netted from close range following a Filip Kiss pass to give the hosts the lead. David Clarkson's first goal for Dundee levelled the match in the second half, the striker firing in following Martin Boyle's pass. But Maatsen struck to give Jim McIntyre his first win as County boss. Defeat ends a miserable week for Dundee, who lost to city rivals Dundee United on league business on Sunday and then again in the League Cup in midweek. County, too, went into the match licking their wounds following a cup exit at the hands of Hibernian and an opening seven Scottish Premiership games in which they had failed to win a point. The Dingwall side's pursuit of the opening goal began with Yoann Arquin dragging a shot wide and the forward was then denied by a telling Paul McGinn tackle. And Arquin had a hand in the opening goal, flicking the ball on for Kiss to cross and on-loan Dundee United forward Gardyne applying the finish at the back post. It was the first goal of his second spell at the club. The visitors suffered a further setback when midfielder Jim McAlister was injured blocking a fierce Rocco Quinn shot and had to be replaced by Cameron Kerr. Kiss directed a shot just wide before the break and the same player drew a save from Kyle Letheren early in the second period. Dundee levelled against the run of play when Boyle raced up the right and centred for Clarkson to hook the ball past Brown. And Paul Hartley's side almost moved into the lead as the match entered its finals stages, Brown blocking Greg Stewart's effort. However, it was County would would prevail. Joe Cardle's pass was knocked on by Liam Boyce and Maatsen smashed the ball into the roof of the net. Manager Jim McIntyre praised new signing Lewis Toshney as the defender helped Ross County to their first league win of the season. The 22-year-old was off the park when Darren Maatsen knocked in the stoppage-time winner against Dundee, having played for 84 minutes on his debut. But he helped shore up the home defence for a 2-1 victory at Victoria Park. "Lewis Toshney will be a good addition," enthused McIntyre. "We know he's a good player." The former Celtic defender had loan spells at Kilmarnock and Dundee and was recruited on a short-term contract as a free agent. Jim McIntyre on Ross County's win "We like to get the ball forward quickly and isolate defenders in the wide areas to make things happen. I thought, to a man, everyone gave their absolute all" "Lewis has signed until the end of January," explained McIntyre. "The only reason for the length of deal is to prove his fitness." County created several good chances before Michael Gardyne tucked away a Filip Kiss pass from close range. Dundee levelled midway through the second half when substitute David Clarkson scooped a Martin Boyle cross in at the near post but Maatsen hammered home the last-gasp winner. "It's the least we deserved," McIntyre told BBC Scotland. "I thought some of our first-half play was exceptional. We just couldn't get the ball in the net. "We should have been further ahead but the team kept going after Dundee equalised and kept doing the right things." Yoann Arquin was guilty of profligacy in front of goal but McIntyre was full of praise for the striker's work-rate. "The big fella put in a great shift for us and upset their back two," he added. "As long as he keeps getting into the right areas, I'm sure he'll start finding the net. "We like to get the ball forward quickly and isolate defenders in the wide areas to make things happen. "I thought, to a man, everyone gave their absolute all. "With two tough games against Inverness and Celtic coming up, the result came at the right time and it stops people asking that question about 'when will you get that first win?'. "Now it's up to us to build on it." |
