Ross County 1 Dundee United 2 After Extra Time.
Dundee United needed a goal in extra time to see off a spirited Ross County and progress to the quarter finals of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.
Mark Corcoran spurned a great chance for County with a close-range header.
And United broke the deadlock with a David Goodwillie penalty at the second attempt after his first effort was ruled out for encroachment.
Iain Vigurs equalised but defender Scott Boyd sent Sean Dillon's cross into his own net as United progressed.
County started the game strongly and Vigurs tested United goalkeeper Dusan Pernis with a low drive after eight minutes.
County keeper Michael McGovern then produced a brilliant reaction save to deny striker Jon Daly.
David Robertson then fed Daly and he in turn threaded a through ball to Goodwillie, who smashed a thunderous drive against the bar.
Corcoran spurned a great chance to give County the lead five minutes before the break when he glanced a header wide of goal with Pernis stranded.
United looked a different proposition after the break, with David Robertson, Morgaro Gomis and Goodwillie all proving a handful for the hosts.
And the Scottish Premier League side took the lead in controversial circumstances.
Goodwillie appeared to foul Gary Miller as they pair tussled for possession and, as the striker was about to pull the trigger, he was felled by Paul Lawson.
The youngster dusted himself down to take the spot kick himself, but despite scoring he was ordered to take it again because of encroachment from other players into the area.
County keeper Michael McGovern got a touch to Goodwillie's second effort but could not keep the ball from finding the bottom corner.
Stung by a sense of injustice, County tried to find an equaliser but the visitors were looking increasingly dangerous on the counter attack.
With four minutes remaining Vigurs raced onto a clever flick from Gary Wood after a pass from Scott Morrison and he drilled the ball low across Pernis into the net.
United took the lead once again in the first period of extra-time when the luckless Boyd deflected Dillon's cross into his own net.
The impressive McGovern denied United substitute Danny Cadamarteri moments before the end as Peter Houston's side booked their place in the quarter finals.
