Ross County 2 Brechin City 1
Dunfermline last night joined the clamour of clubs watching Ross County striker Neil Tarrant as the Third Division leaders opened up a 15-points lead at the top.
Dunfermline manager Dick Campbell made the long trip north and saw the 19-year-old net his 22nd goal of the season from the penalty spot.
But it was a county performance bereft of the flair of Saturday's six-goal triumph over Berwick. For Brechin, defeat was a serious blow, leaving them three points adrift of second-placed Stenhousemuir.
After a quiet opening, the game came alive after 22 minutes with County scoring. Steve Ferguson drilled a shot low at Stuart Garden and then followed up the rebound from Garden's feet with a header which trickled into the net--his 17th goal of the campaign.
County's celebrations were short-lived, however, as centre-half Graeme Christie equalised, unwittingly deflecting Greg Smith's strike to beat wrong-footed keeper Nicky Walker.
The penalty came six minutes before the break, Tarrant's cut-back finding Dave Ross, who was brought down by Smith.
The second half was a disappointing affair, although Craig Tully, a recent signing from Dundee, injected pace on the right flank with a piercing run and cross in 65 minutes, but the action fizzled out in the closing 20 minutes.
