Ross County 4 Rothes 1
Ross County picked up where they left off in the Tennents Scottish Cup to take three valuable Press and Journal Highland League points at Victoria Park.
Early goals from Gordon CONNELLY, who returned after a suspension, and last Saturday's five-goal cup Cracker Brian GRANT had County 2-0 ahead and cruising.
Rothes pulled one back when Johnston BELLSHAW turned a Gordon Duncan cross past his own keeper just before the interval but second-half counters from Robbie WILLIAMSON and Craig REID saw County run out comfortable 4-1 winners.
"It was vitally important that we picked up in the league championship race with a win after the cup tie last Saturday and in the build-up to the derby games against Brora over the next fortnight," said County manager Bobby Wilson.
County's win lifted them three places in the Press and Journal Highland League table and into fifth spot, seven points behind championship pacesetters Huntly but with a game in hand over the Strathbogie outfit.
Disappointed Rothes boss Graeme Scott, who argued that the score line flattered County, said the result underlined his need to strengthen the Speysiders squad.
He said "Our team spirit is good after the East Fife cup tie but we're short of the quality necessary to compete with the top sides in the Highland League and I think it's time we started doing something about it."
