Dunfermline Athletic 3 Ross County 1
On Sunday afternoon County were again unfortunate not to take something out of a game--this time against First Division Dunfermline.
Although the records will show the Fifers won 3-1 the real winner was the wind and had it not been blowing so strongly across the pitch County's Colin Milne--who had another excellent game within 24 hours--would have equalised with the score at 2-1. He cleverly lobbed the keeper but had to watch with disbelief as his net-bound shot was caught by the wind and sailed just past the keeper's left-hand post.
County had been caught cold at the start within a minute were behind. A series of goalmouth scrambles ended with Andy Tod shooting home through a crowd of players.
Although County played second fiddle for a long spell they began to get their act together and show more fight and determination, despite a second Dunfermline goal from Greg Shaw.
But just before the turn County got their due when Brian Grant swept home a beautiful strike from out on the right.
In the second half there was nothing between the teams and it would only have been County's due had Milne notched that equalised when the wind swept in to deny him.
Then with barely a minute left, Dunfermline made sure when Greg Shaw was again on the mark.
But County had played well in both Grant Street games and although sometimes short of pace compared with their full-time opponents, were impressive enough to make their fans look forward to the new season with some anticipation.
Trialist John Peacock played both games for County but failed to impress enough for manager Wilson to continue his interest. It was good to see Gordon Connelly fighting fit again and winger Billy Ferries back at his best with those wing cantrips providing the opposition on Sunday all sorts of problems. And Milne's work rate and determination was rightly praised by the County fans who will savour the season ahead if the tall striker continues this form.
