Ross County 1 Queen of the South 0
Sean Webb returned to the Ross County line-up and scored the winner against Queen of the South at Victoria Park on Saturday--a result that takes County to within a point of the First Division leaders.
The under-21 Northern Ireland international took his place in a three-man defence alongside Mark McCulloch and Stuart Malcolm as County boss Alex Smith changed to a 3-5-2 formation after a disappointing display against St Johnstone.
Smith said: "It was a very important win for us. We had to grind it out to get some kind of result after last week's performance. I was very pleased with the commitment from the whole team, especially the contribution from Sean Webb."
County made three changes with Webb, Hugh Robertson and Graham Bayne back, and all three played their part in a dogged and unspectacular victory over the league's form team.
The visitors had beaten County in their previous five meetings and were hoping to equal a 50-year-old club record of six consecutive away wins.
County looked more up for it after the break and they forced a couple of corners in quick succession.
But a darting run from David Bagan caused panic in the County rear guard, then a Joe McAlpine cross fell to Paul Burns at the far post but he blazed his effort over from the edge of the six-yard box.
Queens paid dearly for that miss, when County were awarded a free kick on the left touchline in the 57th minute.
John Rankin, who was again County's top performer, delivered an inch-perfect cross and Webb was given acres of room to power his header into the corner of the net from eight yards.
The visitors kept plugging away and Stewart saved well from Sean O'Connor as they tried to get back into the game.
Bagan was presented with a half chance in injury time, but he fired wide as County held out.
