Cowdenbeath 0 Ross County 2 After Extra Time
Ross County struggled into the second round of the Bell's League Cup with an extra-time victory against Second Division Cowdenbeath at Central Park last night.
After a goalless 90 minutes Ross County booked their place in the next round with two goals in the second period of extra time.
Substitute Sean Webb broke the deadlock with a header from a Steve McGarry corner in 118 minutes and Conor Gethins made certain of victory by striking a minute later.
Cowdenbeath were reduced to 10 men when striker Gary Gilfillan was ordered off in 101 minutes after accumulating two bookings in the space of two minutes for fouls on Graham Bayne and Gethins.
The Fifers dominated the proceedings early on and could well have been in front but for some good work by County keeper Tony Bullock.
Cowdenbeath striker Graeme Brown caused problems for the County defence.
In 11 minutes Brown raced past Brian Irvine and drew Bullock from his goal but the keeper forced the young Cowdenbeath striker wide and he ended up shooting past the target.
In 18 minutes Craig Winter went close for the home side with a shot from 25 yards which rebounded from a post.
Cowdenbeath continued on top and 13 minutes from the break Mauchlen broke through but his shot was well saved by Bullock.
County stormed back and just before the interval Mark McCulloch put Cowie through and he forced a good save out of Graham.
County reshuffled their side moving Irvine up front with Webb taking his place in defence at the start of the second half.
In 52 minutes McGarry went close with a shot which rebounded from a post.
Ten minutes from time McGarry nearly broke the deadlock with a free kick which produced a fine save from Cowdenbeath keeper Graham. With the teams still deadlocked after 90 minutes, the match went into extra time.
