Montrose 0 Ross County 5 Ross County head coach Stuart Kettlewell hailed his relentless side as they swept Montrose aside 5-0 at Links Park. Goals from Ross Docherty, Richard Chin, Kieran Phillips, Brian Graham and Dylan Smith kept the Staggies top of League One with goalkeeper Brad Foster also saving a penalty for the visitors. The only disappointment on a pleasing afternoon’s work was an injury to substitute Adam Forrester just eight minutes after taking to the field. Kettlewell said: “It was a brilliant performance. Last week we won a game 4-1 and we felt we lacked a bit of quality at times. “We deserved to win and our levels went up, and that’s no disrespect to Montrose. “We showed an intent from the very start of the game and looked a constant threat. We hit the woodwork and had a couple of chances before we scored. “The players had a relentless nature, when we got one we wanted two, when we got two we wanted three. The nature of our team is also that we want to get a clean sheet. “Even although we finished the last 10 minutes with 10 men, due to injury, we showed we don’t just want to win a game of football, we wanted a clean sheet too. “The injury to Adam Forrester looks nasty and doesn’t look particular good. I feel sorry for Adam. “We will have to wait to see how it settles. Fingers crossed it is not as bad as it looks.” “The game became slightly different in the second half. Montrose didn’t want to let the game out of hand and they went downfield quickly and had the wind at their backs and put us under a bit more pressure, although I didn’t think they created anything. “We earned the right at three to be comfortable in the game and scored a good fourth goal, breaking up the park, and earned the right to play the game out in the fashion we wanted to. “Even sitting at four our intent was to constantly entertain our supporters and see if we could score more goals and have a balance to our play, which I thought was there in spades.” Kettlewell was pleased to see a fine team display capped by five different scorers against the Gable Endies. He said: “One of the goals came from Richard Chin’s persistence when we lose possession of the ball. “These guys have got real talent, they’ve got quality and they’ve got end product. He has been one of our best players this season. “We have three really good wide players who we can rotate. But you have to acknowledge the work they do when we don’t have possession of the ball. In the modern game that’s a bit of a rarity. “It’s been a great feature of our play and something I hope continues. “We have a real good balance in our squad, guys like Brian Graham, Akil Wright, Connor Randall and Ross Docherty. then guys in mid-20s. “We have a real good blend. There is plenty of youthful exuberance and enthusiasm. “We tweaked thing on Saturday at the top of the pitch, which would be noticeable with Brian dropping back a bit. “All in all it was a very good day for us as Montrose are a very good side and been on a good run. “It was always going to be a very good test for us, but we were able to blow Montrose out the water. “Akil Wright was immense and I must also give a notable mention to Dylan Smith who had to wait for his chance. “An injury to Lewis Reid allowed him to start the game. “The partnership was flawless. The whole defence looked so comfortable throughout the game.” |
