| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. AFTER their play-off of several weeks duration, Ross County made a start again on Wednesday of last week against formidable opponents Inverness Thistle at Kingsmills. Although beaten by four goals to nil, they were not all that bad, the ability of Thistle to make the most of the slightest opening being the difference between the teams. Thistle had four chances at goal, and took them all, although one counter was assisted across the line by a defender. Playing with the wind in the first half, County took the game to Thistle, and twice shots rattled off the crossbar, the keeper well beaten. On another occasion, when Connolly had broken through to the edge of the penalty area, he was brought down. The County move had deserved reward for Gordon was obviously going to beat the outcoming keeper, the only player standing between him and goal. On two other occasions, when it seemed as easy for the ball to slip into goal high up, it rebounded off the woodwork. In the second half, Ross County made more progress into the wind than Thistle had done in the first period, and produced some delightful combined play. On several occasions they advanced confidently upfield, opening up the defence with accurate through passes and well placed crosses, deserved a better fate. They were awarded a penalty, but Williamson’s kick could best be described as “a good pass back to the keeper!" It was low and it was straight to Calder, who had the simplest of tasks gathering it. Calder had more to do at this particular end of the field than had Mike Ure in the first half. Ross County fielded two new signings — Jamie Macpherson, from Helmsdale, the Brora Rangers winger and mid-field player; and trialist James Laidlaw, an Edinburgh Junior, who showed up well though lacking in match fitness. |
