| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 2 Huntly 1 VICTORIA PARK was playable on Saturday for the first time in almost two months, as a result of four or five days of strong winds, which quickly dried the surface out, and made it more amenable to the ministrations of County groundsmen George Barnetson and David Hamilton. The heavy ground conditions with which teams had to contend all winter had disappeared almost overnight, and as a result players had to adjust their reflexes accordingly with the ball coming sharply off a dry, hard surface with its unevenness at times causing the ball to take flights in all directions, but that in which the player had set his sights. It was a day of adjustment, a day in which the surface suited Ross County play and players more than it did Huntly. Accordingly, County dominated the first half, with their slick, cohesive moves, which lacked, unfortunately, a player who could put the finishing touches to defence-splitting moves. The first half, then, favoured Ross County, but during the second, one felt Huntly had the edge on their opponents, as they played them tight and with more confidence, following an early goal, which gave them time and more to save the game. During the opening period of the first half, Jamie Macpherson was prominent in County raids, On one occasion he went through and took the keeper off his line, but unfortunately shot the ball past the post. On another, the keeper dropped the ball from his header, but it was cleared. One marvelled at the accuracy and confidence of a back-healer from Cammie Robertson, which laid the ball on for Gordon Connelly in an open running position, a situation which was deserving of some reward. Huntly came close when a header from King was tipped brilliantly away by Mike Ure. In the 34th minute, County took the lead, when Robertson, breaking on the right, switched the ball to Chris Somerville, whose far-post cross was turned into the goal by George Stewart. Twice Alistair Macdonald broke away and, when lining up for a shot at goal, was dispossessed. However, in the 44th minute, a hit from Stewart rebounded off the keeper, and Macdonald, following up, tapped the ball home. Two minutes into the second half, Huntly reduced the leeway, when Barbour cracked the ball home through a ruck of players. The game swung quickly from end to end as players ought to come to terms with the faster pace of the game. The County defence was holding well, showing confidence in their last line of defence, and not avers to assisting their forwards in pressing home an attack, despite the heavy and crunching tackles of their opponents. County gained a deserved three points, if only for their first half performance, which spoke of many things. Of goals, there were few, but their outfield play suggested there could have been a lot more. Oh! for a confident striker of the ball! |
