| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 4 Fort William 0 On Saturday, Ross County made heavy weather of the first half, which ended goalless. Even so they had two great chances of taking the lead, both of which were foiled by keeper Graham, who made two superlative saves. On the first occasion, Macdonald had been put through by Somerville; and in the second incident, a pass-back from Macdonald had laid the goal open for Martin Mackay. Fort William looked dangerous on the break, with Madej playing a leading part in their forays. However, as the game progressed, it was obvious Ross County were the fitter team, and the longer it went on they completely dominated proceedings. The ground was heavy, but Groundsman George Barnetson, and the drainage system, had made light work of the previous day’s monsoon like storm, which had broken over the town in late afternoon. Two minutes into the second half County broke the stalemate. A clearance was taken by David Macrae on the right, and he lobbed it to the far post, where Gordon Connelly took the pass in his stride and pushed the ball past the keeper. Martin Mackay made sure of the County’s position in the 67th minute, when he took a clearance from a Ferries cross, and volleyed it into the net from all of 25 yards. In the 78th minute, Connelly scored his second from a set peace situation twenty yards out. He flighted the ball high into the net at the keeper’s left, Graham making an unavailing attempt to turn the ball round the post. Two minutes later, David Bellshaw completed the scoring, when the ball broke to him as the keeper punched clear a corner kick, and he struck his shot clearly home. As the game came to a close, Ross County presented some very entertaining football, particularly down the right wing, where Ferries was in dazzling form. |
