| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal Inverness Thistle 1 Ross County 3 ON WEDNESDAY of last week, Ross County and their fans were in seventh heaven — they had journeyed across the bridge to Kingsmills and had convincingly defeated Qualifying Cup winners, Inverness Thistle, by three goals to one. County dominated the first half and took the lead five minutes from the interval, when Barry Wilson strode down the wing and crossed to the far post, where “Nero” Macdonald headed home a brilliant opener. Within three minutes of the restart, Thistle equalised with a first-class goal from the former County striker Gary Robertson, who beat two defenders before cracking the ball past Suttar. County’s lead was restored in the 55th minute, when a Bellshaw header whizzed into goal from a Robertson corner. Thistle fought back, and twice Christie came close with headers, which were inches over the bar. Bellshaw hooked a shot from Taylor off the line. Three minutes from the end, Albert Allan settled the issue with as great a goal as one could have wished — one supporter reckoning he had taken on and beaten seven opponents in his long run upfield. He shared this run with David Macrae, who was “brushed” aside at the end when Albert saw a wonderful chance of cracking the ball past the keeper. |
