Ross County 5 Caledonian FC 1

ALTHOUGH the County-Caley game was played on Tuesday afternoon, prominence is given to this encounter because it resulted in one of those rare but most satisfying defeats of Inverness Caley, and by a score of five goals to one! County fans are endeavouring to recall when last such a convincing win was registered against their Inverness rivals. As far as they were concerned, this was the result of the year, of the decade, perhaps longer, for it was so clinically achieved. At the close, Ross County were heartily cheered as they left the pitch. Indeed, their every move on the field was warmly applauded. Don Cowie and Dave Jackson, who were substituted, received a standing ovation for their achievements as they left the field of play.
It was a completely dedicated and determined display by County, quite inspiring for their supporters, with every member of the team playing out of their skins as they pitted their strength, energy, stamina, and natural skill and invention against the might of Caley.
The League Champions never knew what hit them as Ross County went two goals up within twenty minutes. And what goals they were — brilliantly taken, the result of perfect team efforts from defence out.
First, Cammie Robertson strode strongly upfield, making light work of the heavy ground conditions, as he benefited from a slick Ferries-Allan move.
Cammie’s well-placed cross to the far post was neatly headed home by Davie Jackson for the first of what was to prove a hat-trick of goals. Davie's header was well directed, strong, and away from keeper Morrison. Minutes later, Albert Allan and Scott Lemmon combined to let Gordon Connelly take on his opponents on the by-line. From his perfectly flighted cross, Davie Jackson was on hand to head the ball home in similar fashion to his first counter.
Caley hit back and for a period enjoyed their best session of the match as they put the County defence under all sorts of pressure, forcing two corners in succession on one occasion. The first was cleared, and the second was on its way upfield, when Martin Hill (a Ross-shire man) strode upfield and, from the 18-yard line, cracked home an unstoppable effort.
Any possible Caley revival was kept under wraps by the home team, as they again raised their game to new levels, taking play to their opponents at every opportunity, with their own defence snuffing out any Caley revival.
With wind advantage in the second half, Caley might have taken the initiative, but again County rose to the occasion and consolidated their position in no uncertain terms.
Goal Number 3 came from the Cammie Robertson/Albert Allan pairing. Both seem to relish heavy conditions as they ran at the defence. Cammie sent Albert through and he outpaced defenders before lobbing the outcoming keeper, with Davie Jackson running in to ensure a goal and his hat-trick.
Albert was again racing through the defence to provide the perfect cross for Nero Macdonald’s first headed goal — a brilliant effort, excelled only by his second, which rounded off the scoring. This followed an inspired piece of ball control by Billy Ferries. He crossed the ball from the by-line as Nero came streaking upfield to bullet it home with a powerful header.
It was an inspired decision to revive this Festive Season fixture, for it gives the menfolk — and the womenfolk for that matter — an opportunity to get a breath of fresh air. The match attracted quite the largest crowd of the season, something like 1,000!
