Lossiemouth 3 Ross County 2

A brilliant display by John Buchan, the Lossiemouth goalkeeper, denied Ross County goals on innumerable occasions on Saturday in the MacEwan’s Lager North of Scotland Cup second round tie at Lossiemouth. His presence, as the last line of defence, has been instrumental in producing improved displays and results over the past month or two.
Twice he was beaten on Saturday, but his brilliance, his swift reactions, and speed across the area were never more in evidence than at two critical periods of the game, when he punched away a ferocious volley from Scott Lemmon, and then he made an instinctive save from the same County defender, whose spectacular diving header would ordinarily have lodged itself in the back of the net.
It just was not County’s day. Supporters present said it seemed they took victory for granted and were casual in their approach, particularly in midfield, which never had its usual grip on the game. It was only when two goals down that they got their act together and put more effort and ingenuity into their play, as they did in the last thirty minutes. However, time and the brilliant Buchan denied them the draw for which they were eventually fighting.
There was a noticeable change in play with the introduction of Barry Wilson on the wing, and with Billy Ferries on the other wing, it brought more width to the attack. County probably lost some of their fine edge as they had been without a competitive match for the previous fortnight, and training had to be cancelled on the Tuesday evening because of weather and ground conditions. A session in the “gym” was not exactly the ideal preparation for a cup-tie.
Lossie opened the scoring in the sixth minute from a 20-yard free kick, the ball being slammed home by midfielder Mitchell, who gave Suttar no chance.
The first danger to Lossie came in the 17th minute, when McCutcheon mistimed a pass back. However, Buchan came to the rescue, when he blocked Macdonald’s fine 15-yard effort.
In the 27th minute, Jackson’s header from a Ferries cross went inches wide of Buchan’s left-hand post.
Lossie went further ahead in the 58th minute, when a Dunsire cross was headed home from 15 yards by Tweedie.
County came back, and Connelly netted from 15 yards in the 79th minute, a counter which was nullified seven minutes from time by Dunsire, who scored from 15 yards. It was a great shot, the goal standing despite strong protests by County that the player, in brushing past Cowie, had taken the ball with his arm in controlling it and gaining possession.
With three minutes remaining, Barry Wilson snapped home County’s second goal from close range.
