| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Inverness Clachnacuddin 2 Ross County 3 In an effort to wipe out the deficit, Clach dropped Macinnes and Mackenzie, bringing in Mackay and Henderson, whilst County relied on the side which gave them a four goal lead. It was soon evident that the Inverness side were going on the offensive as they attacked Newton's charge from the start, to be rewarded in four minutes, when W. Urquhart and Jamieson rose to head the ball. Jamieson stumbled and referee Ogg, deputising for Shanks, awarded a penalty from which Maclean scored. Spurred on to greater efforts and encouraged by the crowd, they went on again and Henderson slipped a low ball to Pines, who, taking it in his stride, whipped in a fast ground drive which was in the net before Newton had time to move. Gradually County began to get on top, but the home defence held on grimly, Baxter paying particular attention to Ferguson, scorer of Saturday's hat-trick, in a manner which did not always receive the referee's favour; but half-time came with the score—Clach, 2; County, 0. The pace of the game was now telling and the Ross team maintained their comeback to gain consolation five minutes from the restart. Patience headed the ball back to Ogilvie, 20 yards out, and he sighted on the goal to leave Macdougall clutching vainly at thin air as the ball sailed high into the net. A brief attack on the right saw Clach awarded a corner, and from this, Patience, back to aid his defence, handled in the box. Maclean again took the kick but drove wide of the post. A minute later T. Urquhart was unceremoniously brought down by Wheeler, whom he had outstripped, and the spectators had their third penalty thrill of the game. W. Urquhart walked from the right back position, stopped two paces from the spot, stepped forward and calmly placed the ball into the net. It was all County now, with Macdougall making a great save from Patience, Sutherland grazing the bar with a 40-yarder, and Patience hitting the upright with an angular drive. A free kick saw Ferguson's effort whistle past the post, and after 32 minutes of the second half Ogilvie lobbed into the goalmouth and Patience rushed in to head past the advancing goalkeeper. An all-out effort by the Clach to at least equalise this particular game, broke on the rock which was Farmer, ably assisted by clean kicking backs and wing-halves, who had a grip on the opposing inside men—Clach, 2; County, 3. |
