Ross County 2 Buckie Thistle 2

With one of the warmest days of the year, a first-class attendance and the first appearance of Graham Davidson, former Aberdeen University and Fraserburgh centre-forward, in the Ross team, excitement ran high at Victoria Park, Dingwall, on Saturday afternoon for Ross County's second round engagement with Buckie Thistle in the Qualifying Cup competition. Colour was added with the presence of the Military Band of the H.L.I. from Fort George, engaged by Dingwall Amenities Committee.
Mr D. Gerrard, Aberdeen, had charge of the game, and an excellent job he made of it. His success was illustrated in the complimentary remarks fired from the ringside, which was a refreshing change from the usual order of things regarding "Refs."!
On play, a draw was a fair enough reflex, although perhaps the County men had little of the luck in the second half, and deserved their equalising two goals. They worked hard for the lead and with more steadiness forward might have pulled it off. On the other hand, Buckie's defence was sound throughout, and as a team they were quicker in getting rid of the ball.
Ross County started off pressing, but it was the visitors who drew first blood, when Tough let Donaldson through with only six minutes gone. The winger held a cross from W. Urquhart and carried on to slip the ball past Newton—a surprise goal which was not looked for. Davidson was now in the picture in getting past Leask with a ball from Ogilvie, but Findlay cleared to corner, Allan missed with a "free" for Buckie and Rooney headed narrowly past. Ogilvie was in fine form but lacked support. Buckie increased their lead when a cross from Stewart found Buchan and Tough challenging Newton, and the ball found the net. Buckie's football was good, and all over they were not grudged their lead.
The second half took on a different complexion with Ross County all out to even the scores. After a period of prolonged bombardment of the visitor's goal, from an Ogilvie pass, Rooney sent in a left-foot drive with Findlay beaten. This break heartened the homesters, and cheered on by the crowd, the play became faster and steadier. With 15 minutes to go County changed Sutherland to centre, Rooney to left-half and Davidson to inside-left. Five minutes later Ferguson shot home the equaliser, from a Sutherland pass. For the remainder of the game both sides strained for a lead, and on several occasions County were saved through the brilliant custody of Newton. The Ross goalkeeper's work during this period presented some of the best yet witnessed at Victoria Park. Unfortunately an ankle injury, which did not prevent him from continuing, was later in the week found to be a fracture, which will necessitate medical treatment for some time, a fact that will be keenly regretted by all.
