Ross County 4 Elgin City 1

If 1930, the year Ross County as the *"babes" of Highland League football carried off the coveted North of Scotland Cup, was perhaps their finest hour; last Saturday's game at Dingwall, against old formidable opponents, Elgin City, came very near a repetition of those past achievements. As one fan was heard to remark—"This is the team, it is just like the old days," days when Jackie Cross, Roddie Munro, Tom Pirie and other stalwarts carried the County colours to victory. It took the Ross men a few minutes to settle down, but when they did, their play began to scintillate. The forward line really operated as such and was a vast improvement on last week; probably an opposition of entirely different calibre helped bring out the best. Elgin though defeated by four goals to one are a combination to be reckoned with in Highland League football. Their mid-field play is still as attractive as ever.
County kicked off and straight away a Logie corner was cleared by Patience. Urquhart got through, placed his centre dead for Green to head-in but referee Harrower gave off-side. From here the game gathered tempo, and while it looked as if the County goal bore a charmed life, the ball bobbing about an open net, with the home defence somewhat baffled.
Again County attacked and Bremner sent a hard drive over; Urquhart was fouled, but the kick was cleared, and a risky pass back by Patience was luckily held. The first goal was initiated by Bremner passing to Urquhart, who appeared to go calmly forward and place a lovely ball for Clark to head in. County were definitely now on top. Duncan at the other end missed narrowly and Newton had a brilliant save from Armstrong, who was always on his toes. Elgin were showing up weaknesses in the homesters' defence, but again it was victory for the Ross men when Ferguson, after a doubtful foul had been awarded, scored through a crowd of players. Munro twice saved hopeless situations for Elgin by fine goalkeeping.
Duncan who got away through MacAulay, centred to Armstrong, who had a chance to do his best. Newton. Elgin's only goal was a nice one. Another ram raid and Bremner scored off a stylish Urquhart cross, to take the score to 3-1.
On resumption, Elgin were first dangerous and Sharpe was unlucky to have his header hit the bar. Urquhart at the other end shot hard but was wide of the mark. His effort resulted in an injury which kept him out of play for some time. MacAulay grassed Browning with a tackle that the crowd resented. Urquhart returned and had a good run, but Wylie cleared the danger. Free-kicks were frequent at both ends, but Bremner, with seven minutes to go, beat Munro. This finished the scoring. Though both sides were showing signs of tiring the game kept a fast pace throughout, and spectators really felt they had had their money's worth.
