Ross County 4 Keith 2

Ross County returned to their goal-scoring tactics at Victoria Park, Dingwall, on Saturday, when they defeated Keith 4-2 in a Highland League fixture. But the first period of the game, even with the advantage of a strong wind behind them, their play was anything but impressive. Crosses often went abegging through wild shooting or slowness in getting up to the ball. Paradoxically, in the second half, playing against the wind appeared to suit them better, and they took their total to four.
Keith adapted themselves more readily and very often had the home men on the run. Their centre-half was always a stumbling block to County, and played a storm of a game throughout.
Patience won the toss and in the first raid Ogilvie headed high over from a Bremner cross. Ogilvie again led through, but had no luck with his parting shot. Play was erratic and poor, with several good opportunities lost with weak finishing. Keith were striving all the time, and when Forsyth got the ball, he shot home a good goal high into the net.
The equaliser came within minutes from J. Findlay, who scored from 30 yards range, Telfer being beaten all ends up. This put some more life into play. Findlay was again prominent with two drives, but Keith were still very much in the picture, and a Carroll header nearly did it. The homesters had every chance of taking the lead with a penalty, but Ferguson shot weakly into the Keith custodian's hands. The County forwards were not combining as well as they should have at this stage, and comment from the spectators was certainly candid.
On resumption, however, new life seemed to have been infused in the Ross men, who started to attack straight away. Ogilvie slipped the ball to Clarke, who forced a fruitless corner. Another Clarke corner was also cleared. Forsyth was pulled up for off-side when through. Then Telfer cleverly cut out a Findlay corner from a host of players. Keith were always dangerous in breakaways.
Bremner gave Ferguson a chance, but his shot went over the bar; shortly after Telfer fisted out from Clark. Then came a score, Clark beating Telfer to a long pass from Bremner, to net at the corner of the post. Newton was next tried by Reynolds, but cleared. Again Newton saved cleverly from a well-placed Maclean corner. But County were gaining the upper hand, and when Clark centred to Ferguson, the latter sent in a smart header which had Telfer beaten. Minutes after, Bremner got through, only to hit the post.
Keith secured their second point through Carroll, whose parting shot had Newton truly beaten; it was a deserved point. Keith fought hard for the equaliser, but it was County who got the last goal, Ferguson scoring from a pass-back which mis-fired.
While the result is flattering enough to County, the game taken as a whole was not one to enthuse over. The referee was Mr I. Mackintosh, Inverness.
