| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Ross County 0 Inverness Thistle 1 Ross County came out of their Stuart Cup-tie with Inverness Thistle this week with an aggregate win of 4 goals to 2. They gave us a sample of their mercurial qualities by winning 4-1 on Monday night at Kingsmills — their first win there since 1938—and losing 0-1 on Wednesday night at Victoria Park. If they were in sparkling form on Monday night they were completely off their game on Wednesday. There was plenty of tension in this second leg, but most of the football was shown by Thistle. The strange thing is that in the first game at Kingsmills the score was by no means flattering, and Thistle’s only consolation was a penalty goal scored by Freddie Carr ten minutes from time. Before this County—urged on by George Sutherland—had netted three times. Two of these goals were scored against the wind in the first half. The first was headed home by Bremner in 20 minutes, after Christie had failed rather badly to cut out an Urquhart cross. This was followed by a grand goal in the thirty-fifth minute. It started in midfield when Ferguson dispossessed Mackinnon and slipped the ball to Urquhart; the winger passed to Simpson whose terrific shot was charged down by Macdonald. Ferguson running in crashed the ball into the net. On resuming, Thistle were more in the game, but Sutherland and Farmer steadied County’s defence, and soon Sutherland was letting Bremner away with long, searching passes. - From one of these moves the ball went inside to Ferguson who let Ogilvie through to send a low ball into the net. Then came the penalty for handling by Findlay. Ogilvie restored County’s three goal lead five minutes from time. Thistle had Sievwright, Wemyss and Inkster, who were absent on Monday, playing on Wednesday. They made a difference, too. County found them hard to hold. |
