| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 1 Elgin City 6 In this game on their own ground, Ross County were defeated by Elgin City, and that handsomely. They had no one to blame but themselves, and they deserved it. A more inept display of football by the County has not been seen for many a day. Newton in goal, Jack and G. Sutherland were the only three players who came out of the game with credit. Even the wizard, Ferguson, was off. Cameron and C. Ogilvie are, however, due much for meritorious effort. With any degree of support both might have gained a better result. On the other hand, Elgin City, although they took some time to settle down, played constructive football, particularly in the second half. It was then that the half-backs took command. They not only held the opposing forwards, but they fed their own and J. Logie and opportunist Armstrong had little to do but apply the finish. Agreed, the ground was soft and greasy, and the players slid and slithered all over the field and the ball was very heavy. But after all, if this was a handicap—and it was—it did not favour one team more than the other. In the opening minutes Cameron got a likely opportunity from Lawson, but just failed. Armstrong was the live wire in the Elgin attack, and Newton was glad to tip one of his drives over the bar for a corner. After a period of end to end play, C. Ogilvie got away on the right and crossed to Cameron, who drove it over the bar. This was County's best scoring chance so far. The cross-bar was the best goalkeeper for a time. At the County end it stopped three drives from Armstrong and at the other end it frustrated both Cameron and C. Ogilvie. Cameron was not so sure as usual, as was indicated when he flashed the ball past the foot of an upright. Then came the first goal and it did not count for Ross County. Left back Jack was beaten on the run by outside right Munro, who sent over a peach of a cross to unmarked Logie. The rest was easy. Right from the centre, County attacked. Lawson connected, ran in, placed nicely to Cameron, who beat Munro with a powerful shot. That was the equaliser within two minutes. For a time the pace slackened and there was little to enthuse over until Armstrong caught a Dick rebound from the crossbar and put his team one up. The story of the second half is easily told. County started well and forced two corners, which proved abortive. The visitors turned the tables and after a corner, Armstrong scored from a suspiciously off-side position. From this point Elgin City never looked back. They simply overwhelmed the opposing defence, and when the County forwards did get the ball they could do little against, by this time, a confident Elgin back line. Other three goals were scored. Armstrong performed the hat-trick, J. Logie got his second and Spence the other. This is another game Ross County can forget. But the League has a long way to go yet. Viva, Ross County. |
