Ross County 4 Caledonian FC 2

Play was interesting from the start, but unfortunate mishaps marred progress. Early on Sutherland was hurt and had to retire. He was able to return in a few minutes. Then Spence got his ankle hurt, a repeat of a previous accident. He carried on mobly, but eventually had to retire and in the second half resumed on the left wing, Chisholm taking his place. The same, however, was not seriously afflicted. A movement by Clark and Miller resulted in Cameron finding himself well-placed. Unusually for him he missed. Almost seven minutes had gone when Caledonian took the lead. For a second the home defence was spread-eagled. Urquhart (Caley) got the ball and placed up the centre. Campbell, lying unmarked, scored with a strong, angular shot. Much encouraged, the visitors put on pressure and in the subsequent excitement Ross handled the ball. It was a pure accident. He tried to stop the ball with his head but it was too fast for him and struck his arm. Macgillivray converted from the spot. Meantime County had not been idle. Miller had a great drive which was headed off the goal line by Macgillivray. But Miller was at fault when he missed a fine opportunity created by Clark. At the other end Sutherland came to the rescue when he saved a certain goal at the expense of a corner. For a brief period Caley were in the ascendency, but Chisholm and Jack were stalwarts in defence, with Newton covering up magnificently. What was most evident at this time was that the visitors made better progress by adopting the long swinging of the ball from wing to wing, whereas their opponents appeared to prefer the close passing game, which was of little good against the active and eager Caley spoilers. Near the close of this half, Macgillivray stupidly fouled Cameron in the penalty area. Sutherland made no mistake with the spot kick. The Invernessians deserved their lead of 2-1 at half-time.
Ross County started the second half with a bang. From the kick-off Clark neatly slipped the ball to Miller, who ran in and cleverly beat Burt. With Spence hobbling about on the wing, County were handicapped somewhat. Even play followed for a period, the ball travelling quickly from end to end. On the whole, it was lukewarm football, and there was a lot of aimless kicking. Indeed on two occasions, not intentionally, clearances by Ross became perfect passes to Watson, the Caley outside left. When Clark scored a third goal for the County things livened up. This was a fine solo effort, but had not the defenders got in a knot, he would never have got the chance. He deserved his success for his coolness. From this point Burt was kept very busy and he had to be very alert to stop shots from Clark and Ferguson. At the other end, Campbell tested Newton, who stopped a piledriver. A minute later he had to thank an upright for saving the downfall of his charge. Next a bout of interpassing between Urquhart and Cameron resulted in the latter getting through to beat an oncoming Burt. With such a lead County slackened up. There were some incidents, when Macdonald (Caley) missed an open goal, and when the injured Spence shook the wrong side of the rigging with a great drive. In the end County were worthy winners.
