Inverness Thistle 4 Ross County 3

Ross County lost this game through lack of taking advantage of their opportunities in the first half, as a result of which they stood four goals behind. In the second half they played like a team inspired and almost brought off a draw. Had they not left the effort too late they might readily have carried off both points.
Five minutes after resuming, Urquhart opened the scoring for County with a shot which Macdonald vainly attempted to reach. This was the medicine Ross County required. With their 'duck' broken they rallied round the Thistle defence, which first got rattled, gradually yielded under pressure and finally crumbled. Cameron got a second goal and Sutherland followed with a third, the result of a finely executed run in which the whole County attack took part. And all this was accomplished by ten men, Ogilvie having retired injured.
From this point play deteriorated, becoming very strenuous and to many people unnecessarily rough. Thistle tried hard to increase their lead, but their forwards seldom were dangerous, and Newton was well able to stem any effort in his direction. At the other end the men of Ross attacked furiously. But by this time the Thistle defence had got its second wind and with Macdonald now in irresistible form, held out to the end. But up to the last minute the County tried hard for the equaliser. Macdonald made his best save in the closing seconds.
As for the first half, it was mostly all Thistle. The forwards combined well and easily outwitted the Ross backs. Ogilvie is no back and should never have been there. Eventually he changed places with Chisholm, which did not improve matters. Then Ogilvie got hurt and the team had to do without him altogether. Ogilvie is one of the County's most enthusiastic players, but he is a forward and his only fault is his nomadic tendency, which experience and coolness will cure. Newton was the hero of his side in the first 45 minutes. He saved a penalty and after that although being defeated four times, he was not to blame for any of them. On two occasions Ross County defenders played the Thistle men offside and confidently appealed. Meantime the Thistle men ran on to score. When will players remember that it is the referee who has charge of the game, and no matter how good, bad, or indifferent he may be, it is he, and he only, who controls the whistle. Fraser opened the scoring for Thistle, which was followed by a cleverly taken goal from Gamble. Later Owens got a brace.
In the end and taking into account Ross County's rally, a draw would have been a fairer result.
