Forres Mechanics 4 Ross County 0

Ross County made the journey to Forres on Saturday, full of confidence; they returned licking their sores. The introduction of Bremner to the exclusion of Clark, and the placing of Urquhart on the right wing in place of his usual berth, has been strongly criticised since the team was announced. To outsiders the Selection Committee's attitude may seem unaccountable, but perhaps there are circumstances that justified the change. Be that as it may, it cannot be said the alterations let the team down. All the forwards were in top form, except that they left their shooting boots at home. Even a penalty was scorned. The fact is that Ross County had not a particle of luck from beginning to end. On the other hand, Forres introduced Frater, a new centre-forward, and in the first ten minutes he had scored twice and put the County defence in the jitters. From that point the visitors had by far the most play territorially and the quality of their game was worthy of goals. Then ten minutes from the end Marsden scored two goals within two minutes and Ross County's cup of woe was complete. It was the Mechanics' first win for eight weeks—so it cannot be grudged them.
Forres lost the toss and had to face the wind. They kicked off and in a matter of seconds they were a goal up. Frater the new centre-forward, simply dived through the County defenders and gave Newton no chance with his parting drive. It was a brilliant piece of work and somewhat dazed the County. Keeping up the pressure, the Mechanics overwhelmed the Ross-shire boys. Three corners followed each other in quick succession and Frater, getting his head to a well-placed corner kick by Glen, smartly scored a second goal. County's turn did eventually come and they gave the home defenders a busy time. Both backs, however, were tackling and kicking resolutely and with Wisniewski behind them, they defied all attempts to pierce their lines. Even with Watt injured, the County attack could do little against a rock-like defence and they retired for a cup of tea with a two goal deficit.
County went off with a great start at the resumption. In their first run-up they were awarded a penalty. Ferguson took the spot kick, but the ball struck an upright and rebounded into play. Even play followed, each goal being visited in quick succession. Newton saved well from Glen and he cleared another when a powerful drive from Marsden struck an upright. At the other end, Ferguson crashed the ball against a post. The ball rebounded to Cameron, who, with no one to beat, generously lifted the ball over the cross-bar. Was there ever such luck? It certainly took the heart out of the County and Marsden's two late goals brought the result to Forres Mechanics 4, Ross County 0.
