| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 0 Caledonian FC 3 The return game took place at Dingwall on Wednesday evening. The visitors stuck to their Saturday team, but Ross County made three changes, Lawson, Robertson and A. Macdonald taking the places of Ogilvie, J. Macdonald and Thain. The game was disappointing, especially to Ross County fans. All over Caledonian were the better team. Their attack was more methodical, the half-backs and forwards combining cleverly. Where they failed was in front of goal, although be it said they were up against a solid defence, with Newton in his best form. This does not mean that the County were entirely out of the picture. They had many raids and several good opportunities of scoring, but like their opponents, they lacked finish. And Sutherland, in goal, was also a stumbling block. It was well through the second half before there was any scoring. A little carelessness in front of goal was the cause. Macpherson crossed from the right. Willox threw himself to the ground to meet the ball and touching it with his head, diverted it past Newton. Caledonian had earned it. This levelled up the score to two all on the aggregate. Both teams went out strongly for a leader, Ross County especially putting up strong pressure, but all their efforts to score were foiled and the ninety minutes finished all square. This necessitated extra play, and two halves of 15 minutes were decided upon. Within five minutes the visitors were one up, Willox beating Newton when he was unsighted. This was the beginning of the end. The County could do nothing right in front of goal. In the second fifteen minutes Willox got away on his own and registered his hat-trick. Caledonian retired worthy winners by 3 clear goals and with an aggregate of 4-2. The turning point came when extra time started. It was then found that the County attack had been changed, Lawson and Urquhart changing places. The move was a failure. Little Lawson had been overwhelmed by brawn at centre, and he did little better on the wing. On the other hand, Urquhart, who had been more than holding his own on the wing, was distinctly out of place at centre. He proved that himself and before the end was back in his own position. It was then too late. |
