The score, high as it was, does not flatter Ross County; it could easily have been doubled, had the home forwards been less merciful. From the start it was obvious that the students were no match for their more experienced opponents, and in the second half the County literally toyed with them. The visitors won the toss, but the choice of ends was of no advantage to either team. The first goal came early on. A throw-in from D. Forsyth connected with Ferguson's head. It landed at Clark's feet, who lifted the ball into the goalmouth. It struck the inside of a post and glanced into the net. The University did get up the head events eventually, and forced a corner. Nothing came of it and in an instant play was at the Varsity end. Clark missed a gift goal, much to his surprise. The ball was then diverted to the right and R. Macdonald sent over a beautiful cross. Clark got it with his head and Wheeler could only take the ball out of the net. Clark gave the defence no rest. Raeburn could not hold him nor Ogilvie and Ferguson, who, feeding their extreme wing men with precision, the whole line moved with rhythm. Ferguson scored a beautiful goal from 25 yards with an unsaveable shot. Before half-time, Ogilvie added a fourth. R. Macdonald, however, deserved credit for this goal. He was in a good position for a shot but unselfishly passed to Ogilvie, who was in better scoring position. The trend of the game can be realised from the fact that Newton had only two goal kicks in this half.
Little need be said about the second half. Davidson, who had received an ankle injury, did not turn out. His team did not seem to miss him—much. They were very more aggressive, although they never looked like scoring. Ross County, in the circumstances, did not exert themselves and goals coming from Ogilvie (two) and Clark, they retired winners by seven clear goals. Macbeth missed an opportunity of counting and no doubt is still wondering how he did it. Fortunately it was not required. From the Ross County point of view it was a disappointing game and certainly no test of the team. Finlay, the new left back from Helmsdale, played quietly and effectively, but he had not too much to do. Adam Forsyth was very steady and the whole half-back line did well, with Patience at his best. There was not a weak forward. For the University the outstanding man was Selbie, one of the cleverest forwards on the field, but he got little or no support. Raeburn did his best to stem the tide, but without avail. The defenders were too light and time after time they were spread-eagled. Although Wheeler was defeated seven times, he could not be blamed for any ball that passed him. He made many excellent saves.
