Ross County 2 Forres Mechanics 4

On a frost-bound ground, on which the ball played all sorts of pranks, this game was very keenly fought. There were plenty of incidents and thrills and spills, but fortunately no one was hurt. No member of either team spared themselves, yet the Forres men appeared to be able to keep their feet better and consequently had an advantage. Adaptability to prevailing conditions was the key, and Forres made it an open door. Ross County stuck to the close passing game, at which they are experts; Forres on the other hand, swung the ball wide. There lay the difference. Ross County were clever, Forres were methodical, if slow.
In the first 15 minutes the Mechanics took the lead through McHallan, his strong shot striking the under part of the crossbar. Ferguson followed with a shot which just skimmed the crossbar. Forres went further ahead through Colvin, who beat Newton with a low drive. The visitors were the more impressive team. Ogilvie had two good tries for the County but the Forres goalkeeper fielded the ball cleverly. From a corner, Pines back-heeled the ball into the net to put his team three up. It was one of the neatest goals seen at Victoria Park.
Ross County attacked strongly on the resumption, and such was the pressure that Becci gave away a penalty, which Ferguson converted. Within a minute Pines nullified the point, unexpectedly scoring with a low shot into the corner of the net. Ross County continued to press and a perfectly placed corner saw Adam Forsyth score with his head. Ross County made a whirlwind finish but could do anything but score.
Forres deserved their win. They adapted themselves better to the conditions and were better opportunists. They were well served by Becci, Taylor and Pines. Ross County had a team without a star and without a plan. Their best men were Newton, Raybould, Gollan and Ferguson.
