| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 5 Elgin City 0 For the second week in succession, Ross County treated their opponents to a superlative display of football, when they opposed Elgin City on Saturday, at Dingwall, and defeated them by five clear goals. The previous week Clach knuckled down to the tune of 3 goals to 1. All over, Elgin did not quite deserve to be defeated by so substantial a score. They had their scoring chances as well as the County, but they could not finish. Ross County lost the toss and Elgin selected the sea goal. Within four minutes Ross were a goal up. Urquhart got in possession on the left and sent over a low ball, which Clark met and drove into the net. The City retaliated strongly but a long clearance by Forsyth again permitted County forwards to attack and Clark and Macbeth, both in sparkling form, were a distinct menace to Wilken. Urquhart shot narrowly past when well-placed. Mackenzie, the schoolboy centre, had a good try for Elgin, but his parting shot went sailing over the bar. Incident followed incident and on the soft, muddy field, play was, in the circumstances, very fast. City had the narrowest escape when Urquhart placed the ball in the goalmouth. Raybould rushed in but the twist on the ball made it turn on the goal-line instead of crossing it. Later Munro saved a great drive by Ferguson. White came into prominence for Elgin, but shot over the bar. With a cute move, Clark sent Raybould away, and Munro again saved his side brilliantly. Two corners fell to the County in quick succession. Both came from the right and were perfectly placed by Macbeth. The first proved abortive, so did the second, although no fault of Macbeth's. Urquhart contacted with the second and with an open goal and unmarked, he sent the ball back to Macbeth, who caught it on the line and returned it to the goalmouth. Then Raybould had his chance. From six yards he drove the ball past the wrong side of the upright. This let-off, however, was short-lived, a very fine bout of passing by Clark and Macbeth, culminated in the former scoring with a great drive. Near the close of this half, Elgin had a spell of attack, and on two occasions Newton came to the rescue of his side, but he was lucky when the crossbar stopped a shot by Mackenzie when Newton was helpless. No one could have grudged Elgin at least one goal in this half. Play was fairly even and ranged from end to end on the resumption. Both sets of forwards ruined likely moves by over-eagerness. County, however, was a little the steadier of the two and this was proved when Ferguson manoeuvred into position and drove for goal. Munro might have been able to stop the shot, but he had no opportunity, for Ralph got the ball low with his head and deflected it into the corner of the net. Playing confidently, Ross County now took command. A certain amount of 'fancy' work was indulged in, of course, without result. Elgin City staged a come-back, but it did not last long, although Patience, D. Forsyth and Newton had some anxious moments. City just lacked that ability to finish off what they did so well in the outfield. A brilliant dribble along the line saw Macbeth cross to Clark, who running in met the ball and registered his "hat trick." Adam Forsyth was the stumbling block to the Elgin attack, and both with head and feet he always appeared in position at critical moments. On the other hand County, by good combination, were always aggressive and it was no surprise when Raybould, with his head contacted with an Urquhart cross and beat Munro, bringing Ross County's total to five. The Elgin defence could not be blamed for the defeat. They never wavered, but they were not quite good enough for the virile County attack. Had their forwards played as well the result might have been different. The best man on the field was Adam Forsyth; Macbeth was a good second. Partick Thistle are fortunate in securing their transfer; Ross County will find it difficult to replace them. |
