| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 4 Elgin City 1 Ross County entertained Elgin City in the North of Scotland League at Dingwall on Saturday. There was a large crowd, who, under pleasant conditions, enjoyed an interesting, if not brilliant, game. The County started with great dash and for a period hemmed in the Elgin defence. Recovering their breath, City retaliated strongly and only some marvellous goalkeeping by Newton, a new comer, kept them out. On two occasions, his saves bordered on the miraculous. With their defence doing so well, Ross County again took up the attack. Griffin, a great forager, kept the forward line very active and the Elgin defenders ever on the alert. Eventually, the home team scored and it was to Griffin that the honour fell. Amid a crowd of players he placed the ball into the corner of the net, Webster having no chance of saving. Thus encouraged, County maintained a constant pressure and good goals were added by Macdonald and Ogilvie. But it was Griffin who did the spade work that made both goals possible. This comfortable lead was held till the whistle blew. Further disaster befell the visitors on resuming, for within two minutes, Souter, the left back of the City, accidentally put the ball through his own goal. Elgin, however, did not lie down and it was at this stage that they began to show what they really could do. Time after time, they went up the field, the ball passing from man to man with marked precision. Ross County defenders were giving nothing away and Newton again gave a fine exhibition of the work of a custodian. He well deserved the congratulations he got. Meantime, the County had numerous attacks at the other end. These always spelt danger and with a little steadiness in front of goal, they might have counted. As it was, Elgin managed to open their account. A free kick just outside the penalty line was taken by Kellas. Hodge connected with his head and placed the ball into the corner of the net. This concluded the scoring, the game finishing in semi-darkness. |
