| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Elgin City 2 Ross County 6 The first round of this competition took place on Saturday. It is played on the home and home principle and the return matches take place to-morrow (Saturday). The result was a welcome surprise to the Ross County supporters. And what is more satisfactory still, it was thoroughly deserved. One such spell of sustained brilliance could not be expected; yet there were many clever moves exhibited by both teams, with the balance in favour of the home club. The County halves and forwards were more cohesive and purposeful than their opponents throughout, and they had most of the luck that was going. Except for two brief periods in the second half, the Elgin attack could not get going; on the other hand, with more steadiness in front of goal, Ross County might easily have increased their substantial lead. The County were well served in the half-line, Winter being the best till injured late in the game. There could be little complaint about the forwards, in which Griffen was the leading light. Ogilvie deserved his hat trick and might have done even better had he not endeavoured to do too much on his own. Hunter is a stylish player and his goal was the best of the match. McGilvory was sound and Spence punted lustily. Newton was very safe in goal. It was Elgin City's defence that let them down. The forwards found the mud and a heavy ball very disadvantageous. In the first half only two goals were scored, both by Ross County. Ogilvie registered in the first minute, and Griffen added a second three minutes later. After the change-over and following a spell of attack by the visitors, which was somewhat easily repelled, Ross County added other two through Winter and Ogilvie. Then from the kick-off Corbett got away on his own and outpacing the backs, easily beat Newton from five yards. Having broken their luck, Elgin played with renewed hope, but against the run of play Ogilvie added a fifth for the County. Hunter notched a sixth, and Corbett brought the City's total to two just on time. The second leg of the first round will be played at Elgin to-morrow (Saturday). With such a substantial lead, Ross County have every hope of passing into the second round. |
