| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Elgin City 2 Ross County 2 The late arrival of Ross County delayed the start. There was little to choose between the teams and a draw was perhaps a very fair result. The home lot were more cohesive territorially, but the County were much more effective in front of goal. And that difference almost brought them victory. As it was, Elgin, after being two goals behind, just managed to scrape home the equaliser in the last minute. The score was strongly disputed. It was Scott who paved the way on the right. He centred a perfect ball, Mackenzie came out to intercept, and in the mix-up with Shanks which followed, referee Mackintosh held that the ball had struck the inside of the upright and therefore crossed the line. It was a doubtful decision to say the least of it. Ross County started the game at a great pace and for a period they hemmed in the City defence. Louden had to play his best to keep out the eager forwards. The City rallied and Ogden had several good tries. He was not, however, receiving much support. Robertson, Kilmarnock, the new player-coach, did not shine, but, of course, he is new to North football. The Elgin defence was not too strong and it was due to this that the County were able to score, Stewart sending home a strong shot. The Ross-shire right triangle was working well. Gillies and Macmahon were ideal partners and with Macdonald feeding them well, they were a source of much worry to Anderson. Shanks and Ogden tried hard to reduce the leeway, but they were up against a steady defence, with Forsyth ever cropping up when danger threatened. At half-time the visitors led by the only goal scored. Ross went farther ahead through Stewart, who scored with an oblique drive four minutes after the restart. Elgin then set up a continual barrage on the County goal, and their efforts were rewarded when Ogden reduced the leeway from a Scott pass. Five minutes remained for play, and Elgin were getting desperate for the equaliser and as already stated, it came in the last minute. Result, Elgin City, 2; Ross County, 2. Mackenzie was a confident goalkeeper and he could not be blamed for either of the goals. Both backs were sound without being brilliant. Forsyth was the fittest man on the field and he got good support from his wing men. Stewart took the honours in front with his two goals, but all the others carried their weight. Young Macbeth, who made his debut as a senior, was subdued by Ralph. He has no need, however, to be ashamed of his display against such worthy opponents. Elgin's defence was weaker than usual. But for Ralph, they might have suffered a heavy defeat. His first-time clearances took the homesters out of many dangerous positions. Logie assisted well, but he was inclined to hang on to the ball too long. Of the forward line, Ogden was the star. He tried hard, but without the assistance of his colleagues he could do little. |
