Ross County 2 Inverness Thistle 2

There was a disappointing attendance at this Emergency match which took place at Victoria Park, Dingwall, on Saturday. The game provided few thrills and it appears certain that much more enthusiasm must be put into the play, otherwise the League will fail to be the expected attraction. Throughout the game the non-competitive spirit was too obvious to be appreciated by the spectators.
Both teams showed several changes from their original elevens, County fielding a grand old servant in W. Mackenzie at outside left. The dashing centre of past years showed that he still retains some of his former characteristics, but time has reduced his staying power. He revived old glories by obtaining his club's first goal. A grand effort which reminded spectators of Mackenzie at his best. Gillies' header into the net also came from the left winger.
The start was dull and uninteresting. Following a great save by Mackenzie from Gillies (Thistle) the game livened up. At the visitors' end Gowl had hard lines with a snap shot, while Mackay caught the Thistle defence unawares with a header, Macneil having to make a brilliant save to stave off disaster. Gillies (Thistle) had a fine opening but his parting shot went inches past the upright. Equally erratic in finishing was Imlack, when he shot yards wide of the goal. A cleverly conceived opening created by Gowl resulted in Mackenzie racing past all opposition to defeat Macneil with a low shot. Within a few minutes County went further ahead. Mackenzie sent a perfect cross into the goalmouth and Gillies headed into the net. The Thistle, however, made amends for previous lapses, Hossack outside left, reducing the lead.
Right from the re-commencement the visitors did the attacking. Even two successive corners brought no results, while Gillies sent a terrific shot crashing against the cross-bar. With only Mackenzie to beat, Imlach made a miserable finish. As ineffective was Gowl at the other end, when he failed to connect with a fine cross from Mackenzie. Kay was Thistle's master-mind, but he also was faulty in his shooting. It lacked direction. The home defence, in which Mackenzie was prominent in goal, held out till the last five minutes. Then Hossack took advantage of a lapse on the part of the County defence, which was weakened through Jack having to retire injured. A double catastrophe almost befell the County. Forsyth (centre-half) handled inside the penalty box but luckily for County Pyke drove the ball against the cross-bar, and the danger was cleared. A draw was a good result. The Thistle had easily the better attack.
