| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Ross County 4 Caledonian FC 2 This match did not provide the thrilling game of the previous week. It lacked the keenness and the pace of the encounter with Clachnacuddin. The County deservedly overcame the Caledonian by 4 goals to 2. For the second week in succession, the home defence did not maintain its reputation of soundness. Under pressure, Ross, the County right back, was unsteady, and this upset his partner, Boyle, a Militiaman, who showed that he was more accustomed to the right position than the left. Again, the home intermediate line was disappointing. Macdonald, Forsyth, and Wood gave quite a good account of themselves when on the defensive but their offensive tactics were very ineffective. All three were inaccurate in their distribution of the ball, their passes to the forwards often going astray, while repeatedly they were too strong in their kicking with the result that the ball was constantly out of play. The County attack was fairly lively. McCue did not shine to the same extent as in the previous match, but nevertheless he was tricky and effective, his work invariably proving dangerous at goal. Moffatt, outside right, and Boal, outside left, were other Militiamen who proved valuable to their Club. Their elusiveness on the wings was a source of great anxiety to the Caledonian defence, in which Matheson excelled at centre-half. Gowl and Birrell have played much better. They did not have a great afternoon. The game opened quietly with the visitors in the aggressive. In a few minutes they took the lead, Warburton, outside left, scoring with a shot which Mackenzie helped into the net. Then Boal made progress on the left, and his hard shot rebounded off MacBain, only for Gowl to miss a great opening by sending over the crossbar. Following this Caledonian took up the attack, and Warburton struck the upright with Mackenzie beaten, while Mackinnon was only inches off the mark with a neat header. With only the custodian to beat, Gowl shot into the keeper's hands. From pointblank range Mackinnon sent in a hard drive but Mackenzie made a brilliant save. Just on the goal-line Gowl cleverly back-heeled the ball but MacBain as cleverly cleared at the expense of a corner. As the result of a spell of pressure, County equalised. Moffat scored with a terrific shot which MacBain did not see. The visitors resumed with an attack on the home goal, but the homesters soon replied, Gowl's rebound off the keeper going narrowly past the upright. County's pressure told at last, Boal putting them on the lead with a drive which MacBain failed to hold. Caledonian raced to the other end, but two successive corners brought them no results. Gowl, however, almost increased his team's total, when his shot flashed past the post. For a foul by Mackenzie, the home custodian, Caledonian were awarded a penalty and Matheson levelled the score from the spot. With a foul-kick just outside the visiting penalty area, Forsyth struck the cross-bar and Moffatt, rushing in, smartly headed the rebound into the net. Caledonian made strenuous endeavours to get on level terms, but Mackenzie played soundly in goal. It was fitting that McCue should get the last goal of the match. He beat MacBain from close in, after Gowl had made the opening. |
