| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Ross County 1 Royal Artillery 3 At Victoria Park, Dingwall, on Saturday last, Ross County were defeated by a Royal Artillery team, which dominated play and fully deserved their win. In the second half the County were in better form, but an early goal scored in this half was their only point. The Artillerymen took advantage of all their chances. A return match in this competition takes place at Invergordon to-day, when a keen game is anticipated. The Royal Artillery team was made up of several players of Highland League experience, notably Lawson, Main and Stewart. With a strong breeze behind them the Artillery opened the scoring within five minutes, Gunner Macdonald, outside right, being the marksman. Before the interval Bombardier Main, the former Caledonian player, who was centre forward, added further goals. Shortly after the resumption Nicol reduced the lead, but the home forwards could not again penetrate a visiting defence, in which Shaw (1.D.A.), left back, and Lawson (Clachnacuddin), centre-half, excelled. In fact, the visitors’ attack, ably led by Main, was more impressive, and but for grand goal-keeping by Morritt, would have increased their total. The Artillery’s defence was particularly sound and completely subdued a listless home attack. Even against the wind the Artillery’s forwards were much more enterprising and resourceful, and therefore their superior all-round play in a disappointing game, earned them a well-deserved success over the more fancied County. Goodfellow, goalkeeper; Shaw, Lawson, Main, Macdonald and Paterson, outside left, were outstanding for the Artillery, while Spence, right back; Urquhart, centre-half, and Macdonald, centre-forward, were best for the homesters. |
