| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Inverness Thistle 6 Ross County 4 Kingsmills Park could hardly be described as playable when these two teams met there on Tuesday in the first round of the Inverness Cup. The players who took part did so at the risk of serious injury, and it was not surprising that the trainers of the teams were as often in action as the players themselves. The football, however, was of a high standard, especially in the second half, when Thistle gave their best display of the season. The game opened quietly with Thistle doing the bulk of the attacking, and in twelve minutes they had established a two-goal lead, Gillies and Gray being the marksmen. Ross County had the misfortune to lose the services of Jack, their left back, at this stage, but instead of this handicap having an adverse effect on their play it seemed to spur them on, and after twenty-three minutes they were on level terms, with goals by Gow and Murray. The visitors had not breathing space for long, however, for in the next Thistle raid Matheson once more gave them the lead. Ross County fought back valiantly, and just on the interval they were rewarded, T. Urquhart restoring equality and Murray giving them the lead. The visitors were never in the game in the second half, and only the brilliance of Applegate in goal saved them from a crushing defeat. Gray equalised for Thistle after missing a penalty, and further goals by Gillies and Gray put the issue beyond doubt. |
