Inverness Thistle 1 Ross County 0

Ross County had much at stake when they met the Thistle at Inverness. A win would establish them firmly at the top of the League. The Thistle were also keenly interested, for a defeat would almost eliminate their aspirations for the championship. Added interest was given to the match by Thistle introducing Barr, a Strathclyde junior, at centre-half, and G. Wylie, formerly of Partick Thistle, at centre forward, Ballantyne, the old centre-half, being at inside left. Ross County were at full strength.
The game started at a great pace, the ball travelling from end to end with great rapidity, but without any great danger to either goal. Wylie was doing well at centre, keeping his wings going with neat passes, Pyke came nearest scoring, taking advantage of a defender's slip. He drove narrowly past the post. The nearest escape, however, came at the other end, when Thomson failed to hold a great drive from Paterson. On rushed the County forwards and Munro was fortunate to scrape the ball off the goal line. Gowl failed immediately after, when, having slipped Barr, had only Thomson to beat. He shot wide.
It fell to the Thistle to draw first blood, which in the end proved the only score. In a scrimmage in front of goal Pyke shot. The ball struck Munro and rebounded to Ballantyne, who standing clear, took his time and sent the ball to the back of the net. On play the count was scarcely deserved. Both Ross and Paterson tried to reduce the leeway, but Thomson was defiant. Wylie might have increased his team's total when he shot hurriedly, when well placed, into Macneill's hands.
The County were now having the most of the play, but the forwards could make little impression on the Jags' defence, which was in great form. Barr was holding up Gowl effectively. Then Wylie came in for an ovation when from twenty yards he shot hard against the post, with Macneill beaten. At the other end Gowl had hard lines with a header from a perfect cross by Paterson. Thomson had to dive full length to bring off a magnificent save. Half-time arrived with the County all out to score.
It was in the second half that Ross County were seen at their best. Backed up by a half-line in which Burnett was outstanding, the forwards attacked with great vigour, and the Thistle defence, in which Munro and Macdonald were doing grand work, had a hot time of it.
Except for short periods of pressure, Ross County did all the attacking. In a front line where Mackay, Calder and Gowl more than paid their way, Gowl repeatedly had hard lines in seeing his shots miss the mark by inches.
Thomson had plenty to do in the home goal, and he did it well, while, in addition to Wylie in the attack, Pyke and Milne did well.
A word of praise must go to Ross County's veteran backs, Munro and Brindle, who both put in hard and effective work.
To say the least of it, Ross County ought to have divided the points.
