| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Buckie Thistle 1 Ross County 0 This game, which took place at Buckie on Saturday last, was far from thrilling and the only good patches of interesting football came from the homesters. Ross County were a scrappy lot, their combination being conspicuous by its absence. Macneil, in goal, was outstanding and it was due to his excellent display that the score remained at 1-0. Nicol, ex-Nairn County, did not shine, but Stewart played surprisingly well. The half-line put in a good afternoon’s work but their efforts were wasted by an ineffective forward line. Moir, Invergordon, was definitely a misfit, while Gillies, his inside man, can be similarly described. Morgan Mackay did a lot of useful work but he lacked support. Bowie, at inside-left, also had an off-day, and Ross, on the extreme left, never seemed happy, being well watched by the homesters’ right-half, Bowie. At the commencement of play Buckie faced a strong wind, and after end-to-end play the homesters pressed and Duncan sent narrowly past. Buckie forced a fruitless corner, and were for a time all over the County without finding an opening. In a breakaway for the County they forced a corner from which nothing resulted. Wood saved an easy shot from Bowie. Thistle again attacked, Duncan and Laing having good tries. A. Smith made a good opening for Calder but he was just beaten by the 'keeper. At the other end D. Ross missed a good chance. The homesters were superior in attack, and Macneil was just on the spot to save a ground shot from Calder. Towards the close of this half the visitors wakened up, Corbett and Mackay severely testing Wood. The homesters again pressed, and A. Smith had hard lines in not opening Buckie's account. Just on the interval Wood saved well from Moir. Buckie took up the running on the resumption and after both goals had been visited Calder opened the scoring, heading home a pass from James Bowie. At this stage the homesters were hardly away from the visitors’ goal, and Macneil, Corbett and Stewart were outstanding defenders. D. Ross got away but Wood advanced from goal and stopped his shot. After give and take play County forced a fruitless corner. At the other end Macneil saved well from Duncan. In a closing rally the County tried hard to get on level terms but the home defence held out. |
