| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Ross County 6 Fraserburgh 1 Ross County gained their most convincing victory of the season by registering a well-deserved win of 6 goals to 1 over Fraserburgh at Dingwall on Saturday. It was truly a veterans' day, the old players Munro and Brindle, the home backs, and Grant, inside right, excelling themselves. Through the brilliant football craft of Grant, the home attack improved beyond recognition, and it is hoped that the County forwards will now maintain that standard. Grant's scheming play brought the best out of his clubmates, who showed unusual punch and effectiveness at goalmouth. The three Mackays, who figured in the team, had no less than five goals between them, while J. Ross was the other marksman. On his last two appearances Morgan Mackay has led his line with great skill and last Saturday's display was easily the best he has played since he joined the club at the end of last season. His first goal, a delightful flick with the head, was a masterpiece and the next, also a header, was equally as well taken. It is also pleasing to record that Garrow has found his best form at left half and that J. G. Mackay has proved a tower of strength in the opposite berth. The County's improvement has restored them to the good graces of their supporters. In the outfield Fraserburgh played good football but in the goal area their forwards' finishing was woefully weak and erratic. None of the forwards had any power behind their shots, which also lacked direction. In the first minutes of the game, J. A. Mackay's shot landed on the top of the net, while the same player placed D. Ross's cross just outside the right upright. Some fine touches brought the visitors to the home end, where Crawford tested Macneil, who had to tip the ball over the bar for a fruitless corner. From 40 yards Brindle drove a foul kick into Fraserburgh's goal and Jamieson was forced to concede a corner. With a good effort J. A. Ross went near the mark. A clever movement initiated by Grant let J. A. Mackay get clear of the opposing defence but the winger's parting shot hit the side net. After twenty-five minutes' play, however, the County took the lead, Morgan Mackay smartly heading J. G. Mackay's pass into the net. Two minutes later he repeated the performance in a similar manner, heading J. Ross's foul kick past Jamieson. The home goal ran a narrow escape when Burnett sent the ball against the approaching Macneil, who had left his goal to narrow the centre forward's angle. At the visiting end Jamieson saved brilliantly from J. A. Mackay and Morgan Mackay nearly added to the score, his hooked shot going narrowly over the bar. From a penalty kick given against Corbett for a foul on Burnett, McCarthy, the Fraserburgh player-coach, put the ball over the cross-bar. Off a rebound from the upright, G. Bell reduced the lead. Immediately after the resumption County went further ahead through J. A. Mackay, who turned D. Ross's cross into the net. In the home goalmouth, G. Bell raced clear of the opposition but there was no clubmate in position to accept the winger's pass. J. A. Mackay then had a clear field but he finished badly. A surprise goal came to the County when Jamieson failed to hold J. G. Mackay's thirty yards' drive. Eluding the Fraserburgh backs and goalkeeper, J. A. Mackay placed the ball outside instead of sending the ball into the tenantless goal. Following this Macneil had two successive saves from G. Bell and Watt. A perfect opening, created by Grant, enabled J. A. Mackay to add the County's fifth and shortly before the close J. Ross calmly picked his spot in the net to score the sixth. Prior to the last goal, Macneil had to clear two difficult shots, Watt's effort being particularly outstanding. |
