| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Peterhead 5 Ross County 2 A depleted Ross County team suffered a heavy defeat at Peterhead on Saturday, the homesters winning by 5 goals to 2. Taking advantage of a fairly strong wind, Peterhead immediately attacked, and in five minutes they took the lead. A. Moir got the ball near the bye-line and turned it back for Stewart to net easily. Peterhead continued to hold a big outfield advantage but they were weak at close range. Wight had a fine try held by Mackay, while a Stewart drive was blocked. Twenty minutes had gone before Ross County had their first dangerous raid, but Morgan Mackay’s hard-hit shot went past. Peterhead returned to the attack and the County goal was lucky to escape in a scrimmage while Stewart was just inches high with a brilliant header. The visitors seldom got past the home backs but J. A. Mackay got through to test Moir with a fine effort. Mackay saved from Stewart at point-blank range. The Peterhead forwards continued to be disappointing and Sloan set them an example with two fine shots from well out. Peterhead went further ahead within a minute of the resumption. Watson shipped to Stewart and the centre-forward ran on to place the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Ross County had a spell of attacking but their forwards disappointed. Rather unexpectedly Peterhead increased their advantage after ten minutes, Wallace netting with a well-placed shot. Two minutes later the visiting forwards got through and J. A. Mackay who had taken up the centre-forward position turned the ball past Moir. Peterhead replied in spirited manner and after they had stormed the County goal for ten minutes Stewart added a fifth goal, thus completing his hat-trick. A mistake by Oliphant in deflecting a ball which Moir was about to clutch enabled J. A. Mackay to reduce County’s deficit. Peterhead were well on top, however, and further heavy pressure resulted in A. Moir scoring a splendid goal near the close. |
