| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Ross County 1 Elgin City 4 For the second successive Saturday Ross County played and were defeated by Elgin City. The game on Saturday last took place at Victoria Park, Dingwall, under Highland League auspices. The day was bitterly cold and this, and the fact that the shinty semi-final was taking place at Beauly, militated against a large attendance. In the first half the County did not play well as a team. The goals scored against them in the first five minutes seemed to have an unsettling effect. In the second half, however, the reverse was the case. Even although Elgin led by two clear goals, the County played with much vigour and dash. The opening minutes of the second half caused great excitement, the County forcing 3 corners and a penalty within ten minutes. Corners and penalty, however, proved fruitless. The early goal for Elgin was scored by Penrose. He received the ball from a throw-in while he was unmarked, and sent in a shot to the net which gave the goalkeeper no chance. Morgan Mackay had the ball sent well down the field. He was rushing to get in touch with the leather when the Elgin back sent a hard drive back to his goalkeeper to clear his lines. Later J. A. Mackay had an excellent shot blocked by Lowden. Play proceeding to the other end of the field, Elgin forced a corner but a good clearance by Corbett saved a tight situation. From an Elgin raid Penrose sent in a hard drive but Macneil made a good save. A spirited County forward rush was foiled by Morgan Mackay being crowded out at the goalmouth. Corbett, while placed within the penalty area, handled the ball, and from the penalty kick Maclennan scored Elgin's second goal. Play proceeding, D. Ross (County) sent a lovely shot across to Morgan Mackay in the goalmouth but he was bundled off the ball. Throughout the game it was evident that Elgin City realised the necessity of keeping close watch over the County centre, with the result that two, and sometimes even three players, stood between Morgan Mackay and the goal. Cormack, Elgin, gave yeoman service to his club on the wing, instituting many good raids, but the County backs were clearing their lines well. The second half opened in spirited fashion, excitement being high for a period. From the outset Ross County got three corners in quick succession. J. A. Mackay's shot went over the bar. Immediately after a penalty was given against Brown for handling, but Brindle's shot was cleared by Lowden. Ackie Mackay had a long shot which went skimming over the crossbar. From a corner Corbett narrowly kicked past. Ross County were still sustaining the pressure. County forced another corner but the kick again went over the bar. From a breakaway Rothnie sent in a hard ball which Macneil brilliantly saved by tipping past with one hand. The corner proved fruitless. From a scrimmage in front of the Ross County goal Rothnie snatched an unexpected goal. Bringing the ball to the other end J. A. Mackay sent over the bar, while goalkeeper Lowden, rushing out, tipped the ball but received a nasty kick and was knocked out. The ball was sent with a long drive up the field towards Elgin goal. Morgan Mackay rushing on kicked the ball past the onrushing keeper into the corner of the net, to register Ross County's only point. A hard shot from Bowie was well saved by Lowden. The ball was quickly transferred to the other end where Rothnie, taking up the outside left position, sent into the corner. Morgan Mackay, from a County rush, sent in a hard shot which the goalkeeper fisted out. Ackie Mackay connected and sent in another beautiful drive. Lowden made a brilliant save with one hand. The game finished up with County pressing hard. At the conclusion of the game, after medical examination it was found that Ralph, the Elgin left back, had sustained a fractured shoulder. |
