| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Ross County 1 Caledonian FC 5 Notwithstanding their win by 4 goals to 2 in the first leg of the Inverness Cup competition, Ross County came to grief in the return leg at Inverness by 5 goals to 1, and thus Caledonian passed into the second round with an aggregate score of 7 goals to 5. The game at Inverness was a curious one and had a most unfortunate ending. Pryde, the goalkeeper, was twice injured in the head and had to be taken off the field and was later removed to the Royal Northern Infirmary. The strangeness of the game lay in the difference in the teams’ play in the two halves. In the first half, Ross County was decidedly the better team. Yet they only got one goal, a penalty which Albert Macrae converted. Bowie, Mackay and Morrison missed golden opportunities to score at a time when the Caledonian were subjected to sustained pressure, yet with only 45 minutes to go, the home side required to score goals to win. They did, and thus accomplished the almost impossible. Right from the kick-off, they took the game in hand, and a goal by Main, which was the equaliser, gave them the necessary incentive. They played like a team inspired. Pryde gave a great exhibition of goalkeeping and defied all Caledonian's efforts until he was injured. After attention, however, he appeared to recover, but the ease with which he was beaten on three occasions subsequently showed that he was in a dazed condition. His efforts to stop the ball were only made after the ball had passed him, which indicated that his brain was not functioning properly. Then he was injured a second time, receiving a kick on his head. After this, he could not resume and he was removed from the field. Against ten men, Paterson scored a fifth goal for his side and the game ended with the score as stated. |
