Ross County 4 Elgin City 3

A dull, drear December day, but a game of color and several palpitating periods. Occasionally the pace was swift; at other times it was drawl. The frost-bound field caused the ball to bounce at the most unexpected angles. This militated against good play.
Ross County had much the better of the exchanges in the first half. They scored three through Anderson and Bowie (2). Rothnie replied with one for Elgin City.
The County's first goal was the result of a beautiful combined effort. MacMillan sent a strong shot upfield, James Ross trapped the ball, then sent it out to the waiting Mackay, who instantly crossed to Anderson, for the last-named to completely beat Parle with a low grounder. The second goal seven minutes later was a replica of the first, except that it was left to Bowie to apply the finishing touch.
Ralph was to blame for the third goal. He clean missed his kick, and Mackay crossed to the unmarked Bowie, who shot. The ball struck the inside of the crossbar and rebounded into play, and the referee pointed to the centre. Just on the interval, Urquhart missed the ball twice in quick succession. The second miss cost his side a goal, although Ross made a double-barrelled save before Rothnie got the ball into the net.
Elgin City started the second half strongly. For a period they hemmed in County, but MacMillan was very sound, and Ross, in goal, defied all attempts. Raising the siege, County attacked, and Anderson and Bowie had good tries. Parle, however, was in great form. He saved two magnificent shots from Anderson and Mackay at the foot of the post.
Most of the excitement was experienced in the last ten minutes, when Elgin were much the better team. Kelman, who played well at centre, got a good goal, although Ross could have cleared at his first attempt. Within fifteen seconds Ross County resumed their two-goal lead. From the kick-off Bowie got possession. He careered down-field, cut in, and beat Parle all ends up. In the last minutes Rothnie reduced the leeway.
It was a good game to watch. Ross County deserved their win. They ought to have settled the issue in the first half and but for Parle, they would have done so.
Parle was the hero in the Elgin team. His backs were good and bad in turn. Logie was the best of the halves, but the forwards, with the exception of Kelman, were so-so.
Anderson, at centre forward, is a sound investment for the County. Mackay showed that he is an outside right of ability, and he has excellent support in Ross. Bowie scored three excellent goals even if he did use his hands, which is doubtful, in scoring his third. Anderson’s goal was very cleverly taken. Fraser was useful, but inclined to wander. Macrae was effective as usual and Macdonald was the better of his wing supports. Macmillan was the better back. Ross was sound in goal.
