| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Inverness Clachnacuddin 2 Ross County 1 After having the best of matters at Inverness, Ross County were defeated in the last moment of the game by a penalty kick, the finishing score being 2-1 in favour of the home club. Ross County, winning the toss, took advantage of a strong wind and from the start took up the attack on a very heavy, sodden ground. Bowie was the first to shine, but Murchison cleared his lines with a strong punt. Four corners were secured by the County, but all were in vain. Munro, beating both Garrow and Mackay, threw away a likely opportunity when he sent the ball on to the wrong side of the net. In the end, the pressure by the County was bound to tell and they got no more than they deserved when Macmillan beat McAngus. The defence was to blame as the goalkeeper was left uncovered. Within a few minutes Macmillan almost repeated his effort. It was a lucky let-off for Clach. Both sets of forwards were active and either side had chances of scoring. Macmillan had two good tries and Ross had a brilliant shot from 30 yards, which McAngus saved equally brilliantly. On the Clach side Maclean and Macaulay tested Ross, but the latter was very safe. G. Macdonald got through and only the woodwork stopped his parting shot. The game was proving very lively and the Clach were putting up a good display against the wind. Ross County were certainly superior, but they had little luck at goal. Shots by G. Macdonald, Macrae and J. Ross were likely counters, except for the splendid work of McAngus. At the other end, Logie and Mackinnon were prominent and Mackay was fortunate to get in the way of a Mackintosh shot. At half-time the County led by the only goal scored. The boot was on the other foot in the second half. Ross County took the role of defenders and they did it well. Clach also were innocuous in front of goal and several times they failed at close quarters. Macaulay was feeding Mackintosh well and Ross had to be on the alert to stop two of his drives. Macmillan had a good try for the County, but Murchison dispossessed him at the critical moment. Mackinnon lost a chance when he tried to beat too many opponents, when he ought to have parted with the ball. Then Munro got the equaliser, and it was thoroughly deserved. The winger shot from the bye-line and it curled in, struck the far post and glanced into the net. Thus encouraged, Clach maintained consistent pressure and Ross did well when he smothered a point-blank shot from Lawson. Then came the penalty. The County protested strongly, but the referee was sure of his decision. Munro took the spot kick and gave Ross no chance. It was hard lines on the County. A draw would have been a fairer result. The home team were best served by McAngus, Davidson, Watt and Macaulay. The County stars were A. Ross, Mackay and Urquhart, Macrae and the two extreme wing men. |
