Inverness Thistle 3 Ross County 1

With a depleted team, Ross County travelled to Inverness on Tuesday evening and met the Thistle in the return game of the Nairn and District Cup competition. On this occasion, the Thistle reversed Saturday’s result, winning by three goals to one. It was a rousing game, fought out at a fast pace. Near the end of play, Ross (County) was again injured and had to be carried off. The Ross-shire players did not repeat their previous form, and the team appeared to suffer badly from the absence of Grant and Cameron. The brainy halfback play of Grant was obviously missed, for the right-wing forwards did not receive the same able support from Mackintosh. The decisiveness and thrust of Cameron was wanting on the left, Robertson being slow in sending into the centre. The honours were again earned by the defence.
Both Mackay and Urquhart were excellent, and when the latter went into the forward line, he infused much more spirit into the attack. A really brilliant piece of dribbling was executed by Mackay. Receiving the ball near his own goal, he beautifully brushed aside all attempts made by several opponents, to finish by sending a fine shot into the goal, which Sherlaw was lucky to turn over the cross-bar. At centre-half, Macrae was prominent and Ross, who still showed signs of his previous injury, was a trier. The right wing, Mackenzie and Black, were the only forwards to cause the Thistle defence any anxiety.
In the first minute of the game, Black sent the ball flashing past the upright and Mackenzie was near with a strong drive. Against the run of play, Gowl put Thistle in the lead, heading Macbean’s cross into the net. Following this, the visitors raided the home goal, but weak shooting and hesitation lost several openings. Off a corner taken by MacGillivray, the homesters secured their second goal, Ballantyne heading home. At this time, the County’s goal was subjected to a heavy bombardment, the Ross defence playing brilliantly.
In the second half, the County adopted a more open game and played at top speed. The homesters, however, were the first to score, MacGillivray netting with a long oblique shot, which went in off the upright. Retaliating with vigour and earnestness, the County hemmed the homesters in their own half for the last twenty minutes. Sherlaw was repeatedly called upon to clear his lines, but ultimately he was beaten with a fine shot from Mackenzie. Encouraged by this success, the Ross men showed magnificent courage and the Thistle were glad to scramble the ball away at all costs to prevent further disaster to their citadel, which they succeeded in doing.
