| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Inverness Thistle 3 Ross County 3 These teams met at Kingsmill, Inverness. The result was a draw of three goals each. It was a surprise result as the lowly placed Ross County on the League table were not expected to stay the progress of the team so highly placed. But it was no fluke. Ross County more than held their own and in the end were somewhat unlucky not to win. A. Ross, Ardgay, in goal, and J. Ross, Balintore, at right back, played a great game for the County. Urquhart was also very safe. Macrae, playing against his old clubmates, was a tower of strength at centre-half, and he got good support from both Macaulay and Garrow. The former improves each match and he promises to be one of the best wing halves in the League. Cumming and Bowie were the better wing, but Tarrell and Mackay were not far behind. Miller, Brora, played well at centre in his first game. He gets off his marks quickly, is fast, knows where the goal lies and kicks a strong shot. From the start Ross County were dangerous and Tarrell had a fine run but the ball went past. The Thistle retaliated and Urquhart got an opportunity, but his parting shot only brought out Ross's ability. Ross's clearance was polished and gave much encouragement to his fellow players. Cowie, the old Ross County player, was a great stumbling block to the County right wing and time and again he arrested what promised to be effective attacks. He also led his wing well and had several good shots, one of which struck the bottom of a post. Both teams fought hard for a goal and attack and counter-attack followed in quick succession. The County were the more thrustful and the Thistle goal ran several narrow escapes. The visitors only got what they deserved when Macrae scored from a corner kick well-placed by Tarrell. This put Thistle on their mettle. They went out for the equaliser with purposeful intent, and within 10 minutes they had attained their object. It was a pretty goal. Kay sent over from the left. Urquhart got it with his head and placed to Gowl, who carried on and scored. Thus encouraged, the home team came more into the limelight and Gowl scored number two from a pass by J. Munro. The lead was short-lived. Gowl had a fine solo run but at the crucial moment was dispossessed by Clunas. Persistence in the end got its reward. Cumming was the scorer with a magnificent shot from 18 yards. The second half was a ding-dong struggle, in which both keepers had to give of their best. After eighteen minutes Gowl, with a splendid piece of play, gave Gray an opportunity which the winger took, and the Thistle were in the lead. The equaliser came rather unfortunately for Thistle, for in clearing Macdonald hit Miller with the ball, which cannoned into the net. Thistle were well served by Macdonald, Ballantyne, Macbean, Gowl, and Gray. Best for Ross County were Ross, Urquhart, Macrae and Cumming. |
