Ross County 1 Elgin City 2

This game took place at Victoria Park, Dingwall. The field was soft and sodden following successive rain, frost, and snow.
Albert Macrae won the toss and made Elgin City face the glare of a sinking sun. This, however, was little or no handicap, as it only came out twice during the game, and for a minute or two at a time.
W. Mackenzie got the first opportunity to shine, from a well-placed pass by Miller, but his parting effort was weak. Kelman retaliated with a solo run which Ross, the County goalkeeper, saved in a confident manner.
From the start it was apparent that this game was to be fast. The play went from goal to goal at a great pace, and every man was giving of his best.
Ross County forced the first corner. Tarrell took it and placed the ball in front of goal, and Parle was forced to give away another corner. Again Tarrell did the necessary. Macrae connected with his head and the ball carried just over the bar. It was a narrow escape for the City.
Cumming next shone in a dribble, but there was no sting in his parting shot, which was easily held by Parle. Macrae’s effort was nearer the mark, when, taking a free kick, he crashed the ball through a crowd of players past the foot of an upright.
Kelman was very active at centre and he kept the Ross County backs on the alert. Several times he got away on his own and he has great speed. Fortunately for his opponents, he did not have his shooting boots on. The wing men were also dangerous, but their crosses were not as accurate as they might have been. Logie attracted attention with a drive, but he was too far from the goal.
Miller got away with a pass by Cumming, but he was somewhat easily overtaken by Harvie. Miller does not have the necessary speed. A score at either end was ever imminent and it was no surprise when it came. It fell to Ross County. Harvie, to ease pressure by Miller, passed back to Parle. The latter cleared, but Cumming blocked the ball, which landed at Tarrell’s feet. The latter steadied and from a difficult angle, shot across the goal into the far corner of the net.
Miller got hurt and changed places with W. Mackenzie, outside left. The City then had a spell of pressure, in which Kelman was tripped almost on the penalty line. The County lined up in front of Macmillan, who was to take the kick. The referee had some difficulty in getting the players the requisite distance back, but when he did, Macmillan placed the ball wide of the goal.
Then Ross had a magnificent save from Macmillan, tipping the ball with his fingers over the bar. Macrae cleared the resultant corner with his head. In an instant the County were at the other end and Parle emulated Ross by putting the ball over the bar. The corner was cleared. Macmillan next gave Kelman a great opportunity. Clearing both backs and from 12 yards, he drove straight for goal. Ross brought off a glorious save.
To save his goal, Parle smothered an Urquhart drive. He lay on the ball surrounded by players. The inevitable foul followed, someone having touched the goalkeeper. Half-time followed with Ross County leading by the only goal scored.
Resuming, it was seen that the County were without Mackay and Miller, and although they did come out later, they were naturally not by any means at their best. Meantime Elgin City grasped their opportunity and equalised. It came from Duncan, who beat several men in a dribble and gave Ross no chance with a fast low shot.
Even with two injured players, the County were holding their own, and with a little luck might have scored. As it was, Parle had to be on the alert to stop a Cumming shot, while Mackay just failed to gather the ball when in a likely position. Then the injured Miller failed in front of goal, when he received an ideal pass from Tarrell. He could scarcely be blamed in the circumstances.
Midway through this half the City were having the best of matters, but Macrae and his co-defenders were in great form. Mackenzie did get through, but he threw away a golden chance to score. Kelman also failed with drives which were too high. The pressure was too sustained to last, and Ross County retaliated, in consequence of which the Elgin backs had to resort to "kicking out." Penrose on the right came into the limelight with a run and centre, but Duncan’s shot only brought out the merits of Ross. Darkness was now setting in and the ball was somewhat difficult to follow.
A draw looked like being the result when two minutes from time, Kelman got the ball from a suspiciously offside position. He raced between the backs, Ross came out of his goal, but without avail, and Kelman placed the ball into the net. From the centre, Cumming and W. Mackenzie made a determined onslaught on Parle, but the final whistle came to his rescue.
It was a fortunate ending for Elgin. The game was worthy of a draw.
