| Match Report | Report from the Ross-shire Journal. Inverness Clachnacuddin 9, Ross County 5 (After Extra Time). There was a splendid struggle at Grant Street, Inverness, in this match. For the first 60 minutes, it was anyone's game. Almost on the last second, Clachnacuddin equalised, bringing the score to five all. This necessitated extra time. Both teams were leg-weary, but Ross County more so than their opponents. Stamina told in the end and the Clach, scoring four times, ran out winners by 9 goals to 5. In the presence of over 2000 spectators, including a large contingent from Ross-shire, the game started at a great pace. With fine open play and long passes to the wings, the ball travelled rapidly from goal to goal. Neither defence was too sure, with the result that both goalkeepers had to be on the alert. A long shot by Mackinnon skimmed the cross-bar. Then Mackay got out of position when he got a perfect up-centre pass from Macrae. Eventually, a score did come and the honour fell to the home team. It was the eleventh minute; Macaulay and Murchison started the movement and Mackinnon got the ball in the centre. He was unmarked and although he was challenged by the backs, he ran straight through to beat Brett cleverly. The cheering had only ceased when Ross County equalised. Mackay was the marksman, but he had to thank Skinner for a perfect pass. Thus encouraged, Ross County for a time had the better of the exchanges and the nippy, speedy forwards gave the Clach defenders little hope. Several corners were forced, but it was not till the 28th minute that the County got their reward. Bowie crossed the ball smartly into the goalmouth. Mackay trapped the ball and shot. Macneill was helpless. Brett next had a magnificent save when he stopped a hot shot from Maclean. He deserved the cheer he got. Ross County continued to be slightly the better team, yet it was the homesters who scored. This was the result of fine work by Macaulay, the Clach’s best forward. Dribbling the ball close in, he passed out to Logie, who centred. Murchison got the ball with his head and Brett had no chance. Just on half-time, Cumming gave Mackay a chance at the Clach end, but Cameron managed to block his parting shot. Ross County were slightly the better team this half, which stood at two all when the whistle blew. Ross County started well in the second half, but it proved only a spurt and Clach took the offensive. It was a very near thing when Murchison, getting a pass from Munro, missed an open goal from seven yards. The County, however, in their spasmodic raids were ever dangerous and Mackay, when he broke through, should have scored. Instead, his shot went past on the wrong side of the post. Again, Davidson luckily blocked Mackay when he was pushing home a Bowie cross. At the other end, Mackinnon should have scored when he got through. Loud shouts of "offside" apparently excited him and he shot into Brett's waiting hands. Murchison, however, did the needful. Logie struck the upright with a shot. The ball fell at Murchison’s feet and the rest was easy. Macrae and Cumming were pressing very hard, and Cumming got what he deserved when he was responsible for the equaliser. Cumming paved the way, passed to Farrell, who centred. Clark missed the cross and Mackay swung the ball into the net. Within five minutes, the elusive Logie once more put his team ahead. It was a fine solo effort. Ross County would not lie down and in the 30th and 31st minutes of the second half, they scored twice to take the lead. Bowie got the first with a typical run and shot and Mackay got the next when he went through the defence on his own. Clach were now desperate and such was their energy that they kept the County defence very hard pressed. Brett, Ross and Urquhart played like heroes, but six minutes from the end they had to admit defeat. Logie presented Mackinnon with the opportunity and he made sure. To the end, the game was most thrilling, but there was no further scoring. This necessitated "extra time." Here started Ross County’s misfortunes. Garrow got hurt and although he resumed, he was handicapped. The Clach appeared the fresher of two tired teams and they counted through Mackinnon, who converted a Macaulay cross. In the last fifteen minutes, Clachnacuddin romped home and goals by Murchison (penalty) and Munro and Murchison brought their total to nine. |
