| Match Report | Report from the North Star. This competition once again brought these great rivals together at Telford Street, Inverness, last Saturday, when a large crowd witnessed a game that failed miserably to live up to the best traditions of these meetings. Although played under charitable auspices, the proceedings were so often marred by untoward incidents that it is better remembered for the significant benefit its objective derived than for the actual quality of play. So much aimless kicking prevailed throughout, and stoppages became so irritatingly numerous, that constructive movements rarely developed into interesting phases, and the play suffered to such a deteriorating extent that it was generally listless. The only exchanges of truly good football were limited to the opening and closing stages, when the final result hung in the balance. A brilliant piece of opportunism on Aird’s part saw Sutherland beaten, but Thomson’s rapid reply within two minutes left the verdict open, and had the County forwards not persisted in too much close passing, the lead surely would have come their way. As it happened, Sutherland saved his goal by the narrowest of margins when he kicked the ball off Aird’s toe with the centre-forward well through, while the goalkeeper was again fortunate to deflect Traill’s shot over the bar for a fruitless corner. However, Lobban had his share of work when he was able to withstand a rousing finish to the half by the home side. During a period of sustained pressure, an excusable turning of the ball into the net by Urquhart gave "Caley" the lead, which they almost lost immediately after when Mitchell was just able to retrieve the ball off the goal line with Sutherland well out of his goal. Although County pressed hard and repeatedly came within inches of scoring, a lapse by their defence close to time allowed Gray to go through and beat Lobban to settle the issue. Of an eleven that seemed to feel the ill effects of a glut of games and end-of-season staleness, the half-backs, Garrow and Hart, rose to a pleasing standard, with Urquhart a shade below his usual form. At centre, Aird showed a return to his old sharpness but did not receive the necessary support, as Cowie was slowed down by an injury, while Kerr did not take too many risks with his injured hand. This also meant that Mackay had to forage for the ball and thus appeared less successful than usual. Traill gallantly overcame the exertion of a leg injury on the left wing. The winners' best players were Ballantyne, Cameron, MacMurdo, and Thomson. |
